AFA 9XXX what can you guys tell me about this serial number that is on a 3" 66-2. It doesn't seem to be. An Ashland run so what else?

I've never seen a ASF s/n, and I don't know if it's anything special. If it follows the normal alphabetical sequence S&W was using, it would of been issued sometime in 1986.

Was it an ex-LEO gun, and do you have any pictures?

If it is an original 3" 66-2, it was probably one of the Ashland guns. S & W never did (does) production or shipping in strict letter or number order, and this may have been a later one in the run. On the chance someone swapped a 3" barrel onto a 2.5" (RB) frame, a factory letter would be the only way to be certain it is original.

I don't know much about its history. I will check and make sure the prefix is correct.

The barrel and other parts seem to match up finish-wise, so I vote original :). The stocks are probably not original but a nice upgrade. Enjoy!

I had a 66-5 2 1/2 inch that had those some stocks. They were factory marked on the inside. Nice find. A 3 inch 66 or 686 are on my Acquire list.

These were reportedly from 1985, but with about 5,000 made I would not be surprised if they were shipped into 1986 as well. Someone here probably remembers or bought them when new and can comment.

Sorry I don't know how I got that prefix I must have mistyped it the other night . Anyway the serial starts with AFA9XXX, but I still don't see that prefix listed for any of the Ashland Firearms. Anybody have any ideas?

Since Model 66-2 3 inchers are rarely found, I know for a fact that a friend of mine will have one on his table for sale this Saturday, 11-15-14, at The Ohio Gun Collectors Show in Wilmington, Ohio. Since I don't what his price will be, I couldn't put this in the guns for sale section. I do know it is a very nice firearm. 4finger

I have a 2-1/2" M66-2 with a S/N prefix of ALV and a 3" M66-3 which carries a BBT prefix on the S/N. The 66-3 came through with the standard Magna stocks. I added a set of the S&W Combat Stocks as well which were purchased in the mid-80's.
The only thing that would be better would be a pinned and recessed Model 19 with a 3" tube.

It could be a transition number. S&W book says AEV-AFJ numbers Nov. 1984

The Serial Number on mine is ANA75XX.
My 3 Inch 66-2 is a little different.
Factory DAO w/bobbed hammer
Tall Black rear sight blade (No White Outline)
Partridge front sight (Pin finish matchs the rib finish and looks original)
Crane Ball Loc using a rounded end pin, and not a ball
Chamfered chambers
Smooth trigger with over travel stop
Trigger job

It had the old style Hogue's on it with the old hanger set up when I got it.
I have talked with Ron Power about it, and he thought it could be S&W Custom Shop work.
