Found a 639 with round trigger guard at lgs today. $379.00 I jumped all over it. Only 1 mag no box but i found an add from 1989 they cost $550 back then for one with adjustable rear sight. The SA trigger is awsome! Cant wait to get it and try out.

Thank you much fella's, I will enjoy it. I only own 1 plastic gun a Cannik tp9v2 which is a very good gun I have a few thousand rounds through it without single problem. I tell everybody though I just do not enjoy shooting the modern polymer guns. Just seems to be missing something, the feel of cool steel is what I think it is, so the 639 will take it's place in a lot of the range sessions.

That's a screaming deal. The rounded trigger guard 639 is an earlier pistol, I would guess an A-prefix gun rather than a three alpha prefix, which puts production far closer to 1983 or '84. By 1989 the Model 639 was phased out in favor of the 3rd Gen pistols. Even still, I have seen the MSRP for a fixed-sight Model 639 listed as $523.50. If you put that 1989 money in to an inflation calculator... your $379 price should make you stand up and DANCE! ;)

Your new gun shares stocks/grips with the 39/39-2, 439 and the elite Model 52 pistols. The 639 has an internal firing pin lock that the 39/39-2 did not have. It's an all stainless pistol and it's heavy and solid.

Some 639's came with ambidextrous decocker levers, some earlier pistols did not. Original magazines for the 639 are silver in color but seem otherwise basically the same as the later model 39-2 magazines... they hold 8 rounds, have a plastic follower and a steel floor plate. The newer 3rd Gen magazine is quite still often found (even new in package!) and is typically marked as a "3906/952" magazine, this mag has a larger plastic floor plate and a 9-rd capacity. This locks in place properly and functions fully as intended in any Model 639 so don't hesitate to buy these if shopping for extra magazines.

The whole line of 2nd Gens only lasted from 1983 to about 1989, I wouldn't use the terms "rare" or "scarce" but it would be totally accurate to say that S&W produced much, much less 2nd Gen pistols than either 1st Gen or 3rd Gen and it's honestly not even close.

The 639 is a fantastic snapshot of an interesting time in American handgunning as a heavy all-steel, full-size but not high capacity 9mm marketed in an age where almost -ANY- buyer that selected a 9mm was looking for 13-17 rounds in the magazine.

Thank you Sevens for the information. You hit the nail on the head mine only has decocker on one side for right handed use. Serial number is A8089## so your correct there too. Gun feels heavy and solid also. I got a pic of the other side but is upside down for some reason??? I will clean her up to get better pics when i get it home next thursday. Thanks again, you guys are great!!

The Standard Catalog of S&W, 4th Edition by good guys Jim Supica and Richard Nahas suggests that your A808xxx likely dates to early 1983. That pistol is a keeper.

Great buy daddio202! That is the exact configuration I want, round trigger guard, long extractor, single side decocker and adjustable sights. My 39-2 is a great shooter, I bet this one will be too!

Congrats on the 639, that's a smoking deal! They are simply beautiful guns and are smooth as butter to shoot. I got one 2 years ago and it kickstarted my obsession with the Smith autos.

Can't help but see you live in Florida also. You need to get your CWP. That way no more 3 day wait. That's one of the reasons I got mine years ago. It's nice going to a gun show and walking out with your pistol, or walking out of a store with it, and not have to put up with the government saying you can't have your pistol even though you just paid for it.
