OK, by now you probably know my addiction to 3" barrels. How about showing those 3-inch L-Frame 686s?

Nanuk, I think there are some others as well. There was an export in 1991 and another one in 1991, a -3 maybe. And I think there were some 686+, no lock units as well. Not to mention the PC ones. I don't have a 3" 686 and hope I can get by on the "cheap" with some pictures here. I really like my 696 and a .357-L would be great!

There were dash 4 and 5's in 3 inch, either 6 or 7 shot, and a number of PC or Horton guns. Also some 681's had the 3 inch tube.
I'd like to post a pic, but don't have any of the above.:(

As far as the 586 goes, Smithnut has at least one 3 incher, if my memory serves me.

581/681 are allowed too! Come on L13 you've got all those other 3-inchers you made me drool over; no Ls?

Here's one to start you off.......

The only 3" 686 I know of was the CS-1 made for Customs. I do love that model.

Three inch L frame 686s are much more common than 3 inch 66s. Other than the CS-1s, the three inch 686 has been a custom for RSR, a gun distributor, and the 3 inch 686 is a current catalog item. There are probably others.

pace40, thank you for the "fix" . The CS-1 must be the ultimate, sought-after 686, 3" bbl. I guess even the 4" CS-1 is rare. Do you know if there was a CS-3? Maybe the export units? And if there was a CS-3, is there a CS-2?

Hello, Lucille!

Chuck Jones, nice group!

DC7, that is SO fine. I want one! ($$$$$$$$$)

This is a S&W 686 CS-3 4 inch, so they do exist, don't know about the CS-2?

Picked up a 3" CS-1 back in the late 80s when they first hit the civilian market as an overrun (?) from the US Customs Service contract. It's still BNIB in the original box with the oil paper, literature, tools and correct Pachmayr grips. Never even turned the cylinder on it. Camera is not available right now but I'll post up a pick or two asap...

Don't forget the 3" 586 L-comp, pre lock of course. A VERY desireable 3" L-frame. Regards 18DAI.

Oh three inchers... what fun.... !

Here's a few:

A 4" M686 CS-3 just for good measure

Here's the 3" and 4" CS-3's with a longer brother:

And, if you get tired of all these 3" L frames, here's a couple links to 3" K frames.... just as much fun IMO.

SmithNut, I was hoping to see you here, but I had no idea of all the goodies you could bring. There has to be a "space" issue sometime in the near future for you, and I'm here to tell you, I'll take some of that "stuff" off your hands. NICE!

Thanks to all of you for showing all your goodies.

SmithNut, thanks for the porn!!!
What are those stock one that 586, I gotta some like those for my 686, gorgeous<insert drooling smilie icon thingie here>

No such model as a CS-2. Just the American Customs Service CS-1 and the -3's, most of which were exported to Germany IIC. Both are "Must Have" revolvers for me because of their history and finely tuned actions. Plus 3" barrels are my favorite lenghts. I luckily have one of each and the CS-3 is the better shooter by a very slim margin. Do believe it's because of the front sight. Still waiting for a nice day to take pics and post them both here on the forum.

Here is the CS-3. I slapped a set of Ahrends on it and promptly put the Pacs back on after 3 cylinders of Speer GD's 158 gr. HP's. Pacs made for a more natural sight picture and were way more comfortable to shoot.

Smithnut, that collection is crazy! I'd have to sell one of my Harleys to fund your's. Something I just cannot bring myself to do!

Miss Fire,
Both M586's shown are wearing the grips they were shipped with. The 2 1/2" is wearing the factory RB Combats, the 3" L-Comp was shipped from the PC with the Altamont RB boot grips.

My PC681. This was one of the guns originally finished in the Birdsong's Black T and Green T finishes. When I got the gun, it was starting to show some finish wear, so I used 120 gr. aluminum oxide at about 25 psi to remove it. I followed that with a bead blasting. I think I like it the was it is, and probably won't polish it. I took it to the range yesterday to test some home-rolled 158 gr. LSWC rounds loaded with 14.6 gr. of W296 (gas checked). It shot very well, and the rounds had a bit of poop to them.

3" 681

Did S+W ever make any "standard" 681's with a 3" tube? The only 3" 681's I ever seem to see are the PC models. I'm a big fan of the fixed sight models. Not so much a fan of ported barrels.
