How much more should one pay for a model 19 or 66 with the 3 T's vs without, in your opinion?

I agree. Would add no value for me. They might make the revolver look better for some people but I have found that wide target triggers with serrations are not comfortable to shoot.

I don't think 3T makes the gun worth any more unless you want those features and haven't been able to find a gun that has them and is otherwise as nice as you want. It may be worth more to you to pay a higher price to get one.. My favorite S&W trigger is the .400" smooth combat trigger. I only have one revolver that has the feature, but quite a few with 3T.

"Back in the day" when I started police work, the ultimate sidearm was the Model 19 S&W. At first these revolvers could not be ordered with TH,TT and people wanted that option. At that time S&W sold them in blister packs for after market instalation. I recently acquired a 19-3, (used) that is equipped with both.

Strange

I recall a number of threads where folks made it seem like the 3 T's were a big deal --- none of my previous S&Ws have them so I always wondered what all the fuss was about. And ads on GunBroker always seem to mention them in sorta the same reverent tones as P&R features. Perhaps I misinterpreted those previous threads.

The bottom line here is they're very valuable IF you like them, and not worth spit if you don't.

The target trigger is great for single action work, not so hot for double. The target hammer is also helpful single action----and doesn't make any difference double action. The target grips are great----if they happen to fit your hand---and not so hot if they don't.

Another bottom line is if you're a shooter, you're missing a good bet if you don't get some custom grips made to fit your hand----REALLY missing a good bet!!

It ain't likely you wear clothes that don't fit you----why shoot guns that don't fit you?

Edited to add: There was a time---a long time ago when I had one of the early Chiefs Special Targets, and one of its baby brothers, a 2" .22 Kit Gun----- ridiculous little guns on the one hand, but ones you could shoot very accurately---at 25 and 50 yards---it you were of a mind to do so. I was of a mind to do so---after ridiculing the posted low scores at Bullseye matches by bragging I could do better than that with my "snub nose". This all started off as just me showing off. It didn't take long for challenges to arise with remarks such as "Oh yeah, for how much?"----and we were off to the races!! I used a little bit of the money I won to buy some J frame target grips---and they helped me to win more money. Then I used some more of the money I won to buy some more grips, custom made to order---and made to fit my hand. They helped to get folks to stop challenging me. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry! These things work---no matter what sort of gun you're using----small, medium, or large!!

If you are a double action shooter then they are worthless and actually detract from your ability to use the revolver as you intend. For a single action shooter they might add something. I try hard to avoid them and even have turned down revolvers with them because I didn't want the expense of changing them.

Sounds sorta like box or no box......agree, or not?

Other than the box is always a sell item if you don't want it. Post an ad in the forum wanting to trade a 3 T kit for a 1970's era box straight up and see how many takers you get.

I like 2T guns, target Hammer and target grips. I prefer the narrow trigger over the wide target trigger and the smooth combat trigger is my favorite

Maybe my tastes are different, but like MikeSC and a couple others, I Sought Out Smiths with the 3 T's.............at least target hammer and trigger. All of mine are mostly beer can, marshmallow, and paper target weapons and I highly prefer the wider triggers and hammers.

Have had even quite a number of 18, 15, and 66 model (4 Inch) with the TT/TH.............. and most all of my 6" and 8 3/8" revolvers have them in all calibers no matter if blue or stainless.

Y'all take care, Bo in western NC

Blue Book's take on the matter

Apparently the blue book does add $48 for TH and TT---but I also agree with most--it's a matter of taste and preferences. Just like I also learned yesterday that S&W 6" barrels are actually generally 5 7/8" and that in a model 66 a 6 1/8" barrel can add 20% to value (according to the 2nd edition of the Smith bible)

I have had a few model 19-5's that came with the factory 3 T's. I like the bigger hammer and trigger myself because I have large hands.
