Besides the date purduced can anyone tell me about these guns? The 30-1 (1972) is listed as a .32 s&w, and the 31-1 (1986) is listed as a .32 s&w long. But from everything I have found on line, it says guns made in the 70's were made for the long cartridge. I actually like the looks of the 30-1 due to it being a round vs. square grip. I don't plan to carry it much, if at all it will be my going for a walk gun.

Both have 2 inch barrels, blued, and seem to be in good condition. Both lock up well, with little to no play.

I guess my question is, were guns made in the 70's actually made for the .32 s&w long?

And what improvements or differences were made between the 30 and the 31?

If it was up to you, which one would you get, and why?

As always, thanks in advance.

Yes, they were both chambered in .32 Long. Theoretically the model 30 was a RB frame (previously the .32 Hand Ejector) and the 31 a SB (.32 Regulation Police) but exceptions to this rule exist. In the -1 era, other than the grip frame they are the same gun; if you like the RB that is all that matters, and replacement stocks are easier to find for this type. Hope this is helpful.

Here is a photo of one of my S&W 31-1's and my 30-1. The 30-1 series was discontinued in the mid 1970's; the 31-1 & 31-2 in the early 1990's.

The .32 S&W Long is a pleasant cartridge to shoot. It is accurate, relatively quiet, produces little recoil, and is cheap to reload. MagTech and Buffalo Bore offer SD loads.

The .32 cartridges are addictive and you will want more of them. If possible, I suggest you purchase both of the guns you are eyeballing. Either would serve you well, and as stated already, you have more stock options with the round butt gun.

If that's the case I believe I'll be adding the RB to my collection. Thanks for confirming about the cartridge Murphydog, that helped in deciding.

That's a nice pair you have there ColbyBruce! I'd love to add them both, but I believe right now there is only money for one of them. Plus I am thinking I'd like to find a 3" if I was to add a 2nd .32. Have a little variety.

With your reloading them, have you found much difference in volicity in the 3" over a 2"?

Thank you both for your reply's. They definitely helped answer my questions.
