I have a ton of Hornady 300 grain xtp's that were made for the 50 AE. I want to work up a load for my 500 Mag. I have IMR4227, 296, H110 and a small amount of Blue Dot. I'm looking for something in the light to medium range. I'm not looking to hunt rino's with it. Data is scarce for anything under 325 grains. Anyone out there using this bullet in their 500?

Reading your post while loading for the 460, I would start at 39gr of 4227 with that 300gr XTP for your 500 based on what's in Lymans 49th etc etc.

Thanks. For some reason I don't have a Lyman book. I have no idea why. My Hornady books are older and don't have the XTP. Thanks for the info.

I don't know if this is off topic or not. When I had a 500 I used to load Trail Boss under a 330 grain powder coated cast bullet from Acme. It was fun to shoot. I found the recipe on the "net".

What is your plan with crimping? The 50AE bullet(50101) does not have a cannelure

I use a Lee factory crimp die so a cannelure is not necessary. My plan is to keep this load on the light side so I'm going to try and get away with a light crimp. The Lee dies work great for me and I can't recommend them enough.

WW296 and H110 are not the right powders to use for light loads.
I wouldn't worry about the XTP bullet standing up to pressure as you are looking at lighter, reduced loads in the .500. Matter of fact, be mindful of minimum velocity needed for that bullet.
I don't own a .500 mag but I do have a .50 Special from Hamilton Bowen. It's designed for pleasant, lower pressure loads and my powders of choice are Unique and 231.

Just finished watching a handload for a Desert Eagle that failed big time.

IMI 300 gr JHP bullet
32.5 grs of H110 powder
Winchester large primer
OAL: 1.575 - 1.58"

Lots of fail to eject and feeding problems.

Good luck.

Probably lack of crimp and weak choice primer for H110.

As a complete novice to loading one thing I do know is H110 requires to be over 90% volume in case, use of a magnum primer, a good crimp, and a charge size comparable to that of its rate of burn. This leaves a narrow window of use, particularly powerful magnum loads. Never used 4227 but probably a much better choice

I think the OP is loading for a revolver.

Yes, thank you.

+1 on Trail Boss if you can get it for "Powder Puff" loads.

2400 will also give light loads if you can find it.

Try your 4227 powder first for the light loads and save the Blue Dot for last, if things don't work out for you.

If and when you try the 500 or 700 grain bullets, you might need
a good pair of gloves if going to the limit!!

Have fun.

I haven't loaded 700's...yet! I did load some 500 cast bullets. I don't remember the load off the top of my head but I know it was 296. It was an invigorating experience! And yes, I do use gloves. PACT padded gloves and they work nicely.

I have some cases ready and I think I'm going to start of with the 4227. I just need to get some time to sit down at the reloading bench.

Thanks for the ideas everyone!

Here's the gun that spits them out.

PACT makes several types of gloves.
Curious as to which you use or what others use?

thx

I might have to buy a 500 so I don't have to answer the most often asked question at the range with:
No, it's a 460 :D

HDY 300gr 50AE bullets in 500 Mag

I have a ton of Hornady 300 grain xtp's that were made for the 50 AE.
I want to work up a load for my 500 Mag.
I have IMR4227, 296, H110 and a small amount of Blue Dot.
I'm looking for something in the light to medium range.

I bought a bunch of these on clearance & have shot them in my 2-3/4" bbl. 500ES.

Hornady rates these 50AE bullets to just 1400fps so they're fine for moderate loads.

I usually use Unique, Power Pistol or Blue Dot in my moderate 460 or 500 Mag handloads.

Using W296 (34-36grs) I got inconsistent ignition which I'm sure was due to the lack of a cannelure & the very slow powder & I never tried it again with this bullet.

Seated to a COAL of 1.910" I tried loads using Blue Dot with charges from 24.5 - 25.8grs. QuickLoad estimates a max velocity at 1231mv/1009me.

With Power Pistol I ranged from 19.0 - 21.5grs with a slightly higher QL estimated MV of 1173 - 1300fps.

Using Unique I ranged from 17-19.0grs at 1196-1290mv, per QL.

All the above used CCI-200 primers but I've used CCI-300 primers with moderate Unique, Power Pistol & Blue Dot loads in the past without any issues

I also have Lee's Collet Crimp die for the 500Mag but mine doesn't seem to put a very aggressive crimp on these bullets.

My notes don't say, & I don't recall, but usually I deep seat a bullet like this (without a cannelure) to the ogive & then use my Redding Profile Crimp die to apply a crimp over the ogive, which has always prevented crimp jump for me, similar to the way the HSM 300gr & Rainier 335gr plated bullets are seated below.

Great info Bluedotz37. I do have a couple of pounds of Blue Dot on hand so that might be a good place to start. I was leaning towards 4227 but I might change my mind on that. Thanks for the info!

I love the gun by the way. I always thought those survival kits were cool.

With the velocity range you are trying to gut, 4227 is going to leave a mess behind... Not sure where you should start with Blue Dot but with Unique I use 18.0 grains with a 350 Berry's plated bullet and get 1050 fps. 20.0 gets 1225 with a Sierra or Hornady 350. This is out of a 4"...very pleasant shooting loads.

If you start with the same loads with a 300 you should be in the same velocity area...

To make loading as errorless as possible I only use LRMP in the 460 cases. I prep, flair, prime and put them away until deciding which powder and bullet.
Wonder if that's why the gun is not that dirty with any powder.

LRMPs are used in 458WinMag loads with 50gr-55gr of 4198 and at 60gr-70gr+++ I use LRP all with 300gr JSP/JHP bullets.

Loading for a 3.5" and 8" 460 is the current fun chore.
Having grips that fit your hands perfectly is a plus. :D
