I ordered a few 300 gr hardcast bullets (18bhn) from Missouri Bullet to try out in my 460 mag. I have had ZERO luck with 250 gr soft (12 bhn) bullets shooting out of my 460 XVR. They tend to key-hole and go "somewhere that way".

Does anybody have a load for the 300 gr hard cast? I could start with a case full of Trailboss, but I don't think I would get the needed velocity to get the hardcast to seal the bore.

Ideas?

I went and dug out an issue of Handloader that I knew had a reloading article on the 460 by Brian Pearce.

There are no 300 grain loads, but there are some for a 310 Keith bullet available from Mt. Baldy Bullet Co.

H-110- 42 grains, 1689 FPS CCI LR primer Starline case
Titegroup- 14 grains, 1226 FPS "" "" "" "" "" ""
2400-35.5 grains, 1628 FPS "" "" "" "" "" "'

Pressure tested and within SAAMI specs

S&W 460 XVR 7 1/2" BBL.

Fired at 15 degree temp.

tHe entire article is in #242, and starts on page 74. There are heavier bullets, as well as jacketed info too.

if you ask the person your buying from they could probably suggest a load, that worked for me

I tried. The guy on the phone asked my why they would use a .452" bullet in a gun called a 460. I hung up.

I looked up the listed Handloader issue. The author said he got leading with the 2400 load and Mt. Baldy cast bullet. I then looked up Mt. Baldy bullets. They list that bullet at 11 bhn. That's real soft.

I'm going to load a few of my (missouri bullet) 18 bhn bullets with the 2400 and give it a try.

I didn't mention the leading since you said you were using a 300 grain bullet, and I figured it wasn't Mt Baldy's.;) They have a very good reputation, and I believe that you can get their bullets in a hardened version as well.
