32 hand ejector

I saw a very interesting package today. I am really curious about the box.

It is a nickel 32 hand ejector, 4" , 195 thousand range, matching, nickel, 98%, star on butt, mother of pear grips plus black resin grips. All in tip top, perfect bore and cylinder bores.

The really curious part- a tan 2 piece box with metal corners, numbered in wax pencil on the end, and odd cut away ends on the lid. Does that box ring a bell. I am guessing maybe it came from the factory after the return visit. It looked post war, but no color.

It wasn't cheap- $799. I passed, but it was uber clean. If someone is interested I will PM the location, Asheville area.

The gun is pre-WWI, probably around 1914 and the tan box would not have been correct in that time. The correct box would have probably been a cloth covered one like the picture below. My guess it that it was a return box. The factory did this in the post war times. I have seen plain blue metal gusseted boxes that were used to return K frame guns from a factory repair. Maybe the gun has a star to indicate return. More often than not, guns sent in for a new barrel, cylinder, etc. would come back with a new finish, so what you are seeing may well not be original finish.

Price is waaaaaaaaaay to high.

The butt does have a star.

I too, think it could be a "return" box from much later on with metal corners.
Does the box have a label on the end?

I'd want to know the date on the left side grip frame. With a star on the butt, it would be after 1920 when the use of the star began.

Do the MOP grips have medallions?

The grips have no medallion but they are nicely scooped at the top.

The return box scenario seems likely. Price seemed high to me too. But it was awefully pretty. You don't often see old 32s that aren't all rusted.
