.32 Mag J-Frame

I carry a bobbed hammer 431PD. 16 ounces loaded. Buffalo Bore Outdoorsman is too much for me. I Use Georgia Arms 32 mag HP's. They are 270 foot pounds so quite strong. It is light, strong, extremely reliable, and powerful. And it is a 6 shot.. i have quite a few guns and i choose to carry the 431PD because it is the best choice. IMHO it is the best personal protection platform there is considering i don't feel the need for high capacity where i live.

How often does the Georgia Arms ammo come available? I just checked their site and they seem to be out of stock. I had previously heard good things about this ammo elsewhere.

Georgia Arms doesn't do a manufacturing run for their 32 mag load often. When I first heard about it, I had to wait the better part of a year to get some.

I stocked up when got the chance.

Good thing I did because CA since banned online ammo purchases.

Okay, good to know.

If I find a revolver, I'll get on their list ASAP, and then stock up when it becomes available.

Another boutique ammo company to look at is Reeds Ammo.

They offer several interesting 32 mag loads including one using the Hornady XTP bullet.

Their 100 gr XTP 32 mag load seems quite hot and extracts with no problem with my 431pd.

But I don't have a chronograph so I'm going only by feel.

Been waiting for someone to post a chronograph result for that load.

That's a good find.

Is this the ammo you're speaking of? They list it at 1200 fps, but I would imagine that is out of a longer barrel.

FWIW, the Georgia Arms 100g load in 32 Mag averaged 875fps from my 2" 432. The Buffalo Bore 100g load averaged 1100fps from the same gun (and 1130fps from an LCR) on the same day with the same chrono setup.

BB advertises velocities for their 100g ammo as 1050fps from a 2" Taurus, 1180fps from a 3" Ruger, and in the mid-1300s from 5.5" and 7.5" single actions. (I averaged 1294fps from a 4 5/8" Single Seven.) If Reed's is advertising 1200fps I'd bet a lot that it's from a barrel longer than 3".

I have tried mightily to duplicate the Buffalo Bore load so I could practice for less than $1/shot. But have never found a 100g load that ran over 1000fps within the maximum published charge of any of the powders I tried. These include Accurate #2 and #5, Red Dot, Universal and HS-6.

The Georgia Arms load CAN be duplicated with 100g XTP bullets within at least some published maximum powder charges (Speer #13 Manual.) I've also worked up several loads at or above GA Arms velocities that use somewhat above published maximum powder charges, given that SAAMI pressures are set for the original, known-to-be-weak H&R brand revolvers, while all other guns are considerably stronger. (Buffalo Bore prints on its 32 Mag ammo boxes that it is NOT to be used in H&R brand revolvers, but advertise that it is safe in all others.) So the GA Arms velocities are within reach for reloaders.

My never-ending quest for the perfect EDC pistol has got me looking at the discontinued .32 mag J-frames, both the 431PD/432PD and the 331.

I currently own J-frames Airweights in both .38 and .357, and while I shoot them accurately (and carried the .38 as a BUG before I retired as a federal law enforcement officer), I am looking for a bit more capacity and also easier follow-up shots.

I'm looking for any feedback on these models, things I should look for, and if there are any inherent issues with the Ti construction of the 331.

Any help is much appreciated....

Lipsey's just announced four J Frame Centennial revolvers. Two .38's and two .32 H&R Magnum's. I want one in .38 and .32 H&R! I've carried a 642, 442 or 340PD since I became a cop in 1992. They're an excellent choice for pocket carry. Now I carry a S&W Shield Plus in 9mm. The things done to these Lipsey guns alone would be close to the cost of the gun or more if I had to send them to a gunsmith.

Those new ones look great. I did pick up a 331 Ti a while back, and I carry it frequently (have it on me right now). That said, those new sights are VERY tempting.
