340 PD with Double Tap Controlled Expansion ammo

I have several boxes of Double tap 110 gr 38 special standard pressure Controlled Expansion rounds left over from the days before Covid.

Can I use this light load without risking eroding the Cylinder on my 340pd?

Does anyone carry these loads for defense?

Hard to be 100% certain without knowing the powder that was used, but I am 99% sure that it will not be an issue

I currently carry 357 Magnum, 140 grain, JHP, Hornady Custom in mine

I might use a little 110 gr bullet in the Summer time in Calif............

but if I was around the Great Lakes area in Winter time I would use a lot bigger bullet, for all the heavy garments that are usually worn.

You might need more than one bullet placement, also.

If you look on the barrel there is a warning not to use bullets lighter than 120 grain. That's there because the recoil from the light, high velocity rounds will cause the bullets left in the cylinder to pull out of the case and jam the gun. I don't really know if the 38 will generate sufficient recoil to cause a problem but I'm going to bet it's close. Just be aware of that if you try it and I probably wouldn't use them for self defense.

I called S&W about the warning on the barrel of my 340PD and was told it only applied to magnum rounds & it was OK to carry/shoot 110 grain .38 special standard or +P.

Again, you MUST try them out in your gun, and not just a cylinderful of 5. I did have bullet pull in a 637 with the old Norma .38 110gr "Magnum Load." Not something you want to discover when things go south.
