340PD and Buffalo Bore Ammunition - My Personal Experience

I have tried various loads in my 638. +P's are stout to say the least.

But old habits die hard, and I still load up with the FBI load.

Something about that old dependable round that I just can't get away from.

Oh, BTW....Remington/UMC 125gr JHP's from Wal-Mart smack you pretty hard
in a J frame...ow.

I have settled on a few loads for my 340 M&P, and feel that these loads are all "do-able" without too much recoil or muzzle blast.
I find it much different to practice at an indoor range, where one is restricted in movement....

When I practice, I am outdoors and can draw from under concealment garment and move "offline" while engaging the target.

In this way, it seems like felt recoil is much less, because of adrenaline and hyper-focus on the front sight and target.
Anyway, my favorite carry loads are:
Buffalo Bore 158gr .38+P LSWCHP (gas check)
and
Speer Gold Dot 135gr .38+P short barrel
or
Speer Gold Dot 130gr .357Magnum short barrel

With any of those loads, I do not have any problems getting back on target quickly, and can unload 5 shots center mass while moving laterally or backwards.
Like I said, I find a big difference in felt recoil and time on target when standing in an indoor booth vs outdoor movement.

Hello Wheelyfun66,

You are most fortunate to be able to shoot at an outdoor range that allows movement rather than a table/stall.

Unfortunately, the outdoor ranges I have access to here near Plano, Texas, don't allow movement.

I guess felt recoil is different during movement versus static shooting at a bench. The only thing I can vary without getting a tap on the shoulder warning is lifting my arm up from the table to shooting height and leaning over on my elbows.

I guess the movement forces your mind to focus on other things in addition to the firing, versus in a booth, you are focused just on the firing. Maybe.

I'll let you know if I ever get the chance to get away from the stall table :).

Cheers,

Richard,

If you're interested in shooting on a hot range with movement, Suarez International is offering some classes in the north Texas area. I took the CRG class with Jon Payne in 2011 and it was very good.

p.s. Is that an O-2?

Hello Photoman,

Thanks for heads-up on this course. Need to investigate this. Also looking into a two-day course by Robin Brown.

Yes, that is an O-2. Good eyes! This was during my forward air controller days with the 22nd Tactical Air Support Squadron at Wheeler AFB, Hawaii back in 1976-77. The good ole' Cessna Push-Pull Skymaster!

Let us know if you find any other classes in the north Texas area.

I thought that was an O-2. Thank you for your service! The O-2 (Cessna 337) is a very unique plane with a very unique sound. Don't hear them flying over much any more (I live near KADS).
