340PD

Mine is an early one with a lock and red ramp insert.
Like a few others here I have mine equipped with CT LG405 laser grips. I have a few 642's and their being 2oz heavier is a big deal. Also, the longer ejector rod on the .357 is a plus in clearing empties.
While on walks, it rides in the back pocket of my jeans in a leather pocket holster which allows me a full grip, and with my shirt untucked, it is invisible.
135gr short barrel Gold Dots are no problem for me recoil wise and I shoot 50-100 rds per session at no less than 30' with handloads on a regular basis.
Love that little gun.

357

As I was reading these comments it appeared to me that probably at least 75% of the folks who bought a 340PD would be just as well off, or better, with a 342PD. S&W should have made more of those. I hardly ever see one for sale. I’m sure there’s a reason for that. (That is not meant to take anything away from the 340.)

357 chamber does both, hence no need for the 342 I would venture is how S&W looked at it..unless you need the 50 fps lost from a 38 outa A 357 chamber...but then just shoot a heavier load in 38. But if I had to choose to lose one model over the other..you guessed it, I'll keep the chamber that does both.;)

+1. While I don’t fire .357 out of my 340PD (or 19-4 for that matter) it’s nice to have options, especially in light of the ammo shortages we’ve experienced lately.

The 340 PD is my EDC and I doubt it will be super ceded for the duration. 38 Special is quite manageable, 357 is not as much fun, but nice to have the option. It is very easy to carry in your pocket all day. No magazines, no cycling, no safety.

I kept coming back to mine. I tried a pm9, p3at and a rohrbaugh r9.

The 340 is a better built gun with better sights but it only weights about 2 ounces less than a 642. I think I would spend the money on a laser grip and trigger job on the 642 unless the 2-3 ounces make a big difference to you.

Thanks for all the replies , how durable is the finish on these guns?

I bought mine several years ago from a deputy who kept it in a leather ankle holster that was laced to his boot top. I’ve carried it much in a OWB leather holster during the colder months and a nemesis pocket holster in the summer. . It has held up well with some shiny edges along the top of the frame and the cylinder looks great.

For ankle carry, the 340PD is worth the extra money. For pocket carry, the 442/642 is the way.
