.35 Rem availability

Trying to help a buddy find some .35 Rem for his rifle. Auction site is insanely priced and googling and searching has been unfruitful. He's not going to start reloading. Has the cartridge become "end of life" or it just scarce because of non-popularity?

MidwayUSA shows some Federal coming in soon, but it's 220 gr HP for $43/bx. Hornady, Federal, and Remington 200 gr. is shown as limited production. That usually means they do one run a year. You can get on the list and MidwayUSA will notify you when it comes in.

Not sure about other sights.

I like 35 rem. I have several Marlin 336's and a stash of the ammo and reloading supplies.

When it's available, your friend would do good to buy more than one box.

My Grandfather and my Father used Remington 760's for hunting deeo in PA. & NY. Theirs were in .35 Remington and all they would use were 220 grain bullets. They both said the 220 grain was better for hunting than other choices in .35.

Just the other day was down at Cabelas looking at Ammo.
Asked the Young Guy next to me what caliber he was looking for.
30-40 Krag. OMG! If they got it’ll be on the other side.
They didn’t have it. I was looking for 380. Nope!
Bought 2 boxes of MiniMags.

Manf. only got so much equipment. They are selling all the Para Military ammo they can squeeze out. Nobody is operating with inventory. They want it sold off the end of assembly line.
Of course they can retool to make a new cartridge over night. Not only 35Rem but other classic hunting rifle cartridges are scarce too. There are cartridges that have so little sales/use today that they aren’t profitable.
Face it for last several years the industry has been saved by the demand for anti personnel weapons and ammo. Until this panic is over it ain’t going
to get better.
35 is my favorite woods deer gun. I’ve had several but only one now. I load for them. All my experience shows 200gr RN shoots best in Marlin 336 and the Rem 8, 81, 14 & 141.

Last time I bought a box...year or so ago, it was no problem finding it in the local stores that get hunter traffic during the Northern New England deer season. But this thread has me wondering if the hoarders are hitting the local stores around here and cleaning out the hunting ammo.

35Remington is on the once in a while run list it seems and has been for a while. As is factory brass for reloading.

30-40Krag, even 300 Savage have been shoved off to those sidelines.

Searching shows can usually turn up some brass, once fired or older factory loads,partial boxes.
Thats where I seem to accumulate most of the stuff
I use.

There was a guy (gone now) on the CAstBullet forum that made & sold a lot of different cases from common brass.
One was making 35Rem from 7.62NATO or 308Win.
Beautiful brass and it held up just as well as factory 35R.
He was quite an artist in the cartridge case conversion trade.

I will hazard a guess. I am sure that you are aware of the serious ammo shortage that we have been through these last two years. Though there seem to be some signs that we might be coming out of it, I am sure that they most popular cartridges are the ones that are getting attention first.

35 Rem is a popular round and has been around a long time. There is no shortage of guns chambered for it out there. I imagine that there will come a day when it will be on store shelves again. It just might be a while before the ammo makers get to that one.

It took a while for .30/30 to reappear on the shelves, but I’m finally seeing it again. .35 Remington is less common but still popular so I bet it starts showing up soon.

My only .35 Remington is this Savage 170. Its kind of an odd duck. Savage just refitted one of their shotgun actions to work with rifle cartridges. Most are .30/30s.

I shot exactly one deer with it. We were living on the Hi-Line in Montana and you could pretty much get all the doe tags you wanted. I picked my oldest son up from grade school and we headed out to a nearby spot with a lot of coulees. We walked along the top and I had told him to look behind us once in a while, a tip I had gleaned from the latest Outdoor Life. (I didn’t start deer hunting until I was 40.). I heard him stage whisper: DAD! Sure enough a big fat mulie doe was about 25 yards behind us, just standing broadside. I said watch your ears and let fly.

The deer said OOOOF and dropped straight down dead. There was a ball of hair in the breeze just floating away from where that fat 200 grain bullet went through.

My kid still talks about it, so I’m stuck with this rifle.

When I was a kid my first deer rifle was a Rem #8 in 35. Not listening to the older guys I bought 170gr spire points. Lucky did tune up and found they shot lousy. Got the 200gr RNs and shot very good. All the older guys in crew had bought Remington 742 and 760s. One gun guys bought 760s because auto not allowed in PA. Me and buddy busted our but to save up and got 742s in 30/06, like the rest of the crew. Worst case of keep up with Jones I was ever involved in. Should have kept the old #8.

This goes back over 20 years, but during one of my visits to Federal they were producing their annual run of .35 Rem. I think they told me that it was going to be in production only for a few days. At present, that period may be zero days, as they are producing mainly just the very high volume calibers and letting everything else slide.

I'm quoting myself. I completely forgot I have a nice Remington 141 in .35 Rem made in 1941 and I also picked up a Remington 760 in .35 Rem. Its the BDL deluxe, they only made it in .35 Rem in 1980. I picked it up for the rarity and the caliber. Looks nearly new- I haven't shot it.

This thread, albeit about ammo, has my brain thinking about what's buried in the safes.

This thread is exactly why I stocked up on ammo in every caliber that I have a firearm. Collector or shooter, I have ammo for them. I also bought reloading supplies for the less popular stuff. A friend once told me that the constitution may protect our firearms, but it says nothing about ammo. I guess I'm one of those hoarders I see posts about.

I too, stock up on ammo for everything I own. Nothing is real exotic except for a pistil in .38 ACP. Finding that at a reasonable price is next to impossible. So I reload for it. Did find a box of factory ammo for it once in a small Mom & Pop gun shop in Pa. I asked them how much since it was not marked. I was figuring to hear $80.00 as that is what they wanted at a gun show several years ago. When they said $20.00 I almost broke my arm getting the funds out!

You bring back memories. When I was a kid I did not have access to much money so my deer rifle was a 98 Mauser that I made shorter and smaller with a hacksaw (I know, but back then they were a dime a dozen).

I hunted deer a lot with my friend and his father. His father had a Remington 8 in 35 Remington. From my point of view at the time that was just about the most wonderful gun that mankind had ever invented. I could think of no other for years. I guess I must have fallen out of love as I got older because I have never owned one. Sitting here thinking about it, I might just have to do something about that.

For reloaders, It iis possible to re-form ,308 brass into .35 Rem, but it is not as simple as it sounds because the base diameter of ,308 brass is slightly larger than the .35 base. But it can be done. Best to use .35 Rem brass if it obtainable.

He lives in NJ. I suggested he try the stores during hunting season. He's not a hunter but wants a few boxes on hand for the range. I didn't know if it was just the typical shortage issues or if had gone obsolete.

I have a couple Model 94's in 30-30 that were my dad's PA deer guns but never had anything in .35 Rem.

For those of us that use the 35 Remington it is not obsolete just not common here in the Merry Old Land of Oz. I have owned a Marlin 336 for over 30 years and rarely seen it on store shelves. I quickly started reloading it. In addition to deer it is big medicine for hogs.

Friend might try a gun show. There is usually a little at the gun shows I go to but it is way overpriced also.
