Hello guys and gals. I'm a 52 yr old newbie.
I have had this 357 for about 15 years, which was bought from a retired Police officer. A couple things, I'm looking how to get more information about it. Also, the day I bought it, it slipped out of the gun case a fell on kitchen floor and cracked the hammer. By doing a little research I see I have a range hammer and trigger. It looks like the original owner polished the trigger and hammer? I'm trying to find out how I can replace the hammer (cracked) and a trigger to match so I can put it back to stock. Any info is greatly appreciated. Here are a few pics.

Jeff, i am a newbie myself. joined in may 2019 i think. i think those are a target hammer and trigger. that would match target grips. the parts you seek can probably be found with a add in the wanted section of the site. make sure and read the rules for posting first. some others will come along that know a GREAT DEAL more than i.

all i would change is the hammer. krs

Opps i almost forgot the most important thing. WELCOME to the site from texas krs

I assume your 27-2 shipped in September 1975 or later and was fitted with a target hammer and trigger and target stocks made of Goncalo alves. So, a target hammer for an N-frame revolver is what you need. Your 27-2 would have also been shipped with a presentation case. The red post front sight blade is also special order as this model usually came with a Patridge blade (for this barrel length).

Jeff:

Welcome to the forum. I have had luck finding hammers and triggers on eBay. Sometimes they drop right in and fit perfect, other times, they need a little help from my friendly gunsmith - Nelson Ford.

Good luck,

Welcome to the S&W Forums.

Your Model 27 has the target hammer and target trigger, both would have had a color case hardened finish from the factory. You can probably find a target hammer for the N-frame on eBay. Getting the finish to match the trigger might be tough. To me, they look like they might have been hard chrome plated.

Welcome from Virginia

Welcome to the Forum from Virginia!

From your posted serial number the date of your Model 27-2 should be between 1974 and 1977. The only way to know for sure what trigger and hammer shipped with your gun originally is to send for a Letter of Authenticity from the S&W Historical Foundation.

The reason that you MAY have to send for a Letter is IF you want to be 100% accurate when finding the original correct trigger and hammer.

This is because 1975 was a reported change year for different triggers and hammers. According to SCSW 4th edition, from 1948 to 1975, the Model 27 (and the "Pre-27) came with .265" wide service trigger, and .400" wide semi-target hammer. From 1975 to 1980 these guns had a 500" wide Target Trigger, and from 1975 to 1994 had a .500" wide Target hammer.

The Model 28 Highway Patrolman shipped with a .400" wide semi-target hammer, and the standard trigger was called "service trigger" at .265" wide (grooved). The Model 28 also had an optional trigger that was smooth and .400" wide called Target Trigger.

Other than sending for a Letter, you could probably measure yours with calipers and check Brownells, or Flea-Bay for replacements once you know exactly what you're looking for.

Once you know what you want consider placing a Want to Buy add here in the proper sub-set of the Forum. Please follow all the rules before posting.

Below pics are my 1952 Pre-27; 1977 Model 27-2 Blue (3-1/2" bbl); 1980 27-2 Nickle, and my Model 28-2 1975 Highway Patrolman. They have all been Lettered and are in original as shipped configuration.

Again.........welcome to the Forum and I hope you can get that nice 27-2 of yours squared away and can afford a box or 2 of ammo in these hard times to hit the range with. They are great guns, and nobody, but nobody...makes anything like them anymore.

Thank you ALL for the quick responses. I can't remember exactly, but the guy I bought it from years ago I believe he said it was from 1975. So if it's a later 1975 it probably came with the 500 target hammer? Do you guys suggest looking on eBay for the factory box? Thanks a ton for your welcomes and wealth of knowledge!

i knew the fellows in the know would show. thanks for not letting me down. Oh and posting pics. my 27-2 with 3 Ts now wearing BMM stags. krs :) Oops almost forgot again. welcome to the forum. seldom a day goes by that i don't learn something. great people

THE factory box?

There are 2 kinds of ORIGINAL factory boxes:

1. THE original factory box is numbered to the gun, and unless the person you bought it from kept it...chances of ever finding it are very close to zero.:(

2. a PERIOD CORRECT factory box. This type is correct but the end label will probably have a different serial number, and maybe even a different Model no. Cost can hit $100 easily for these fine condition originals.

3. Fakes: these are modern printed cardboard boxes usually seen by fakists all over e-bay and such. Cheap imitations that don't really fool anyone, but for some reason...Seller(s) are still in business. Not worth your time, money and personal integrity.

Some of my Smiths came with original boxes, documentation, and tools...not very many...but still here's what some look like.

Get the hammer you need, go shooting and enjoy...the rest is only gravy.
