.357 for Carry: Seeking Recommendations

I will own a Model 65 3" one day but, in the meantime, my 2 3/4" Ruger Speed Six Stainless, is filling in nicely. About the same size, a bit more tolerant of magnum loads, fits the same holsters, and trigger just about as smooth. All that said, I keep an eye out for that 65 3" ;-) I use the Bianchi Pistol Pocket IWB for it and I like it.

Mine would be either a model 19 or 66, I have a few. I also have a 686+. Sorry, but the the 66/19 is my favorite. Nothing fits my hand or balances as well as a K frame. Don't even know why I keep the 686.

Can we just look at my user name, and insert "3 inch" after model65roundbutt and call this discussion a day?

In all seriousness though, weigh everyone's opinion here and I think you will be hard pressed to come up with a more perfect "carry/combat/tactical" revolver than the original Model-13 M&P Heavy Barrel and it's stainless counterpart the Model 65. If your prefer a full shroud as some people do, forget your ego a get a 3" Ladysmith in .357 Magnum if you can find one. You can always polish off the logo if it bother you. They are fantastic guns!

Just make sure it's not a sqaure butt! And I will throw my hat in the ring and say that a 4" K-frame is a little big for CCW. Just my $0.02 worth. Best of luck in your endeavors!

Regards,

Matt

My favorite revolver was a 66-1 with a 4 inch barrel that had ben converted to a round butt cofiguration. It was displaced last December when I purchased a 66-4 with a 3 inch barrel, also a round butt. Both wear factory combat stocks. I have had model 65s in the past, both 3 and 4 inch barrels. All are great guns.

Strictly for carry, I would also agree with the M65 round butt with a 3" barrel. If it is going to share range time as well, I would opt for a 4" M66. K-Frames would be my choice either way, but there are some very nice L-Frames on here. I don't think you can go wrong either way.

If you want a 4" .357 revolver for CCW, then i'll recommend these.

S&W:
27/28
586/686
65/66

Ruger:
GP-100
Six series (Security six, Service six, Speed six)

Colt:
King Cobra
Trooper

When I opt to carry a 4" revolver, I turn to the GP-100.

The 620 could probably be properly described as the "modern equivalent) of the Model 19. It has the sturdy qualities of any "L" frame coupled with Model 19 style barrel. Of course it has a two piece barrel and is matte black except for the titanium cylinder. It is EXTREMELY accurate and has minimal barrel cylinder gap. Further, it is a round butt (shown with wood "round to square butt" grips.

Wow I love the looks of that gun. Who made the grips?

Those grips are standard with the gun (isn't THAT nice

).

You can hardly do better than this if you prefer blue.

I also carry a 3 inch round butt Model 13-3 in a Bianchi Pistol Pocket for a 2.5 inch k frame, and it carries VERY well. One of the best combos ever for personal defense in my opinion.

They look like Ahrend grips which come standard with some S&W Performance Center or special-edition revolvers.

I saw a similar .44 magnum in Bass Pro today. I didn't pick it up but am sure it was an "N" frame. It was the same combination and had the same grips. Pretty showy for me, but I do think it is handsome.

Awesome, I already ordered some Ahrends for my new 586 which has sort of the same look (blue frame, stainless cylinder). I'm expecting them tomorrow. I hope it comes out as good looking!
