Greetings from a newcomer to your forum. :D I have a S&W 6" barrel .357 Mag. On the butt is S 100215. On the Cyl. is 100215. On the frame and cyl. hinge are matching numbers, 19249. I know little of the S&W numbering system. Any help on age style etc. would be appreciated.

First of all, welcome to the forum.
Looks like the predecessor to the Model 27, often referred to as a Pre-Model 27. Model designations began in 1957 and were stamped in the frame where you found the assembly numbers.

Based on the serial number on the bottom of the grip frame and the cylinder, it looks like your gun was shipped in 1954.

The other numbers you see are merely assembly numbers and have no significance after leaving the factory.

You have the Cadillac of modern S&W revolvers. Enjoy it.

Thanks much guys. I've learned more in five min. than I've learned in two hours of searching the net. I love the gun...what is the value range to insure something like this one? $500.00 or so?

Well, I don't know what a pre-27 is going for these days, but me and a bunch of other forum members would be glad to give you $500 for that gun. And welcome. Beautiful gun and the pride of the S&W line when it was manufactured.

Sounds like I should insure it for a bit more then...never hurts to "shoot higher" when insuring. This was carried in Alaska by a gentleman who was there to build the airstrip during WWII. He stayed up there for many years until finally coming here to the Seattle area in the 1960's. Thanks again guys!

You came to the right place to find out about this old gun . Some other bunch might not level with you .

Old steel can lose its specific gravity or something . It might be time to upgrade to a Sigma . I like I have
the for sale thread . lol . You're kiddin about not knowing what you got huh ? I just read your handle . Here in our common language .

I am never trading a gun again so this is not suggestion , but I would be amazed if your .357 was not worth far more than my Kimber .

No kidding...I'm a .45 ACP shooter, Thompson Contender, and other choice rifles, but knew nothing about this one.

Based on the prices I've seen pre-M27s selling for I would say your gun is worth more than the $500 figure you posed. Knowing the provenance of the gun makes it more valuable to me. Congratulations on a great acquisition and welcome.
