357 or ar-15???? need help

All right guys I have a bit of a dilemma here....
I'm waiting for my local gun store to call me back about my new smith and Wesson 686 7shot but I don't have the cash and I a stag arms Ar-15 model 2tl and I paid 1200 for the rifle and also have 5 30rd mags and I think I want to see if they will do a trade for the 357 they are asking 770 for with my at and a box of ammo if the get all 5 mags but I don't know if I want to do that or not.....

Well, tough choice, but I would stick with the AR, ....Unless, of course, it does not run well. It is a little harder to source some parts for, being a lefty version, but is still a rifle....

Hard to trade a good long arm for a handgun. Especially taking a nearly 500 dollar hit, if I read the OP correctly..

The dealer is offering you a fair deal. The Stag AR is only slightly over $700 wholesale which is what he can buy it for. The 686 is about 700 wholesale. I realize that not everyone has access to dealer pricing, but thats what he is looking at.

As much as I like the 686, that sounds like no kind of deal to me. You should sell the AR elsewhere and buy the 686 and have money left over. There should be no problem selling an AR nowadays.

I think the AR is a much more versatile firearm. Capable of punching holes in paper, SD at longer ranges, and better suited for HD. It can also kill game further away. And last but not least....wait till elections and prices will jump....its an investment

I went to my LGS and wanted to trade a Puma 92 rifle in 45 Colt and a IAC 1887 12 ga. lever shotgun for a Governor. They offered $300 for both. I passed. A private sale is the way to go.

I've also found that AR prices have fallen as there is now a supply again. I'm seeing Palmetto lowers for $120 or so. A LGS had an AR sale two weekends ago with DPMS ARs for about $900. He had about 20.

At the end of December my LGS wanted my slightly used Century C15A1 that I bought from him about a year before. We worked out a deal for a NIB Browning Cynergy 20ga O/U I'd been eying. He gave me more trade value for the C15A1 than I paid for it 2 years before. My LGS was happy to have the C15A1 and he sold it for more than he gave in trade. Wouldn't happen today.

I think AR prices are going to fluctuate with the political situation from now on much more so that revolvers. At some point AR prices will be up again due to some new push for an AWB. Revolver prices will stay more market driven.

As far as practicality, it really depends on your use and how much you want to trade.

The dealer is NOT giving you a FAIR deal !! . Your AR list for 300$ more than the smith, ( wholesale), plus you have 4 extra mags ( 60$), he is already making more than 20% on the Smith. A 50 rd box of 125 jhp is 25$. If your AR has been fired drop 15%. You could sell the AR for 1000-1300 if its new , if fired drop it to $900 with the mags assuming 95% condition, sell it privately and use the extra money to buy ammo. That is the dollars and sense of it, but I agree with Gyrene6891, keep the AR and get the 686+ later when you have the cash. Be Safe,

I do not think the future bodes well for "MSRs" unless the rats are resoundingly forced off the sinking ship before they can get anything done. Even then, they might simply be replaced by another group of rats. The rats probably will not have the stomach for trying to round them up any time soon, but making it hard to get new ones is bound to be at the top of their wish-list.

Even though AR prices have come down significantly since December/January, if the deal isn't a good one- walk away and look for another deal/trade. It's ok for the LGS to make money-they have to to stay in business-- but find an LGS who will be fair about it.

There are a lot of S&W revolvers out there, particularly K and L-frames, and they are pretty tough and hard to kill. You might be able to pick up a nice used one for a few hundred dollars less than the cost of new one. Save up a little and you will be able to keep the AR also- or take your time selling the AR until you can maximize its value.

Revolvers will be around for quite a while yet.
