Was in a sketchy part of town getting work done on wife's truck. Stopped at a Pawn Shop I rarely frequent. They had a few revolvers from a like new Taurus 65 for $400 to a S&W Mod15 for $600. Imagine my surprise when on the bottom self was a nice 36-1 sitting on its original box marked for $350. I didn't even haggle. $390 OTD

I thought about it but the gun had just come out of Pawn on the 17th. This shop won't budge the first 30 days.

No kidding, amigo. I generally feel kind of disgusted with myself after the twentieth dry hole in a row, but when I run across a honey . . . well, I sure am inordinately pleased.

That right. The 3-inch gun was a 101510. Spec. Ord. number indicates a ship date of.....

October 17, 1986.

The M-36-1 is one of the best small .38's. Has a lot of field utility as well as being a good CCW gun.

I thought I did well a few months ago when I grabbed mine for $450.00, but you did better.

Here's a picture with the Herrett's that came with it. I've since changed to "regular" grips with a Tyler T adater.

Kinda a zombie thread, I know, but I was looking at one of these 36-1 heavy-barreled round-butt with magnas on it today. No holster wear and a very light turn ring, and the only handling marks I saw were a few scrapes on the heel of the left grip.

$450 on the hang tag. It was pretty hard not to bring it home with me, but I already have 4 S&W j-frames including a 36 no-dash SB with the tapered barrel. Was I an idiot for passing on it?

Would they have maybe sold it for $400? That seems to be a fair private party sale price around here. I have a 36 3" no dash I'm wondering what to do with. My eyes just don't get along with the 1/10 front sight blade any longer.

I don't think so, but regional prices do vary. I looked for one for a few years before I found the one I bought in July. I sold the Herretts for $50.00 and replaced them with a smaller combat grips and a Tyler T, for about the same amount.

To me that price would be okay if it had an older, late '60s serial number. The next criterion I would apply would be whether it has a pinned barrel (pre-early '80s). That's just me. I got into my 1976 3" square butt for $360 out-the-door, but the one you looked at sounds to be in better condition.

Well, it does have a pinned barrel, and I'm thinking it is a mid 70's vintage - because it had a "floating" J in the middle of the serial number - 3rd digit IIRC.
