38/44 With Factory Ivories?

My nickel Pre-War HD

10,000 further on down the line. (I know some of you may be tired of this pic but not me!)

I now easily understand the initials that I could not see in the first set of photos -- T and H for sure, but I'm not sure whether we should read them as TH or HT.

Congrats to those with the sharper eyes. And those are very nice follow-up photos.

Be patient on the letter. Roy Jinks is away for his desk for about four weeks, and he will have a backlog to deal with when he returns. I also recently mailed a letter request, and I don't really expect to see a response before January.

Internal Photo

Lee wanted to see what the insides looked like on this old HD. I do believe that the sideplate had NEVER been removed. It took me three days of soaking in oil to get the screws loose. Some rust and lots of dried oil/varnish. It is amazing that the action is as smooth as silk! I am now in the process of completely disassembling it and cleaning up the mess.

Just imagine how smooth that trigger will be when you get'er scoured out and new oil on it, as smooth as a breath across silk !

The 38/44 arrived yesterday and I took some clear photos that solved the mystery of the logo on the grips. It is a stylized monogram. Hand Ejector was 100% when he called it "TH", looks almost like an old west brand. The shroud has an "N" before the serial number. The gun is almost like new mechanically, not even any wear on the hammer thumb piece. Very poor storage did a job on it. Bore and chambers are bright. Can not wait to see how she shoots.

I'm not sure that cartridge will fit in the chamber of that old gun!:)

Renickel?

Oldskool, this one has original nickel and will stay that way because as Aspinhill stated, only about 11% of the production run was nickel. I have requested a historical letter from Mr. Jinks and hope that there are links to the past owner as HT or TH as the case may be! One can only hope.

Jinks Letter

Anybody have a S&W revolver that lettered as being shipped to J. M. Nieto Co. in Anasco, Puerto Rico? Do you have any information about the company? Please share!

Outstanding find. Great old revolver and I am fascinated by the grip carving.

Because the cross bar of the H is on top of the vertical post of the T, I believe that the H is the first of the initials. (i.e. HT). The font has a religious or fraternal look to me. The letters may represent the Greek letters "Eta" and "Tau".

Did you get your letter back, Delta? It would be great if you could post a picture of the shipping information. Did it letter as factory nickel (I'd bet a dollar it did!)?

Posted Update

A-10, note the additional update (edit) to the first post. It did letter as a nickel gun, but the ivory grips were added later. She's a sweet shooter and note where it was shipped in 1934.
