Thanks for posting this. I love good pix of those gold emblem grips from that era.

I've seen them in sort of maroon boxes, but someone more knowledgeable will be along to say more. Some box lids have instructions in both English and Spanish.

The correct box is the two piece hinged lid cardboard box with a light green end lable that says Military 38 Police".

Ed...I've got a couple in this time frame with a pale yellow label as well. Do you know if there was date distinction for the different colors. I've looked in the past but could never find anything. Thanks

Thanks for all the info on the box, next step is to find one. I ran acrosss this gun not long ago, it actually looks better that the photos, I need to upgrade my camera skills. What date are you guys guessing on this M&P and would this be the original type grips.

I can say for a certainty that this is the correct box for a .38 M&P shipped in December, 1941. Your serial number predates mine (8846XX) by several years but the box could be correct for your serial number. The color of the box is a dark reddish brown. Hope this helps.

#2428XX shipped on August 16, 1915.

I would guess 1917 to 1920 for yours, as they stopped making the gold medallions around 1920.

Yours was made before heat treated cylinders, so no +P or hotter ammo.

Thanks for the info, your date confirms my suspicion. I had guessed about 1920 based on what I could find.
