hello s&w forum,

Need some help identifying the model,year,value,etc.. serial# on barrel, grips, and cylinder all match. Patented on barrel is feb 06 06 / sept 14 09 / dec 29 14. Any help would be appreciated.

Story is my dads grandfather won it in a poker game before 1938???

Thanks to dcwilson for helping me out with pics.

First off, welcome to the forum. The photos are appreciated.

It appears you have a Military & Police Model of 1905, 4th Change that dates to 1924 or so. It's hard to say if the nickeled finish is original or not, but a factory letter might resolve that. The stocks are almost certainly not original, but their thin profile is rather elegant in my opinion. This is a hard gun for assigning a monetary value (there are a few issues with deterioration of the plating) - I think it has greater value as a family heirloom in any case.

There were so many of that model made, it is usually not rare or very valuable unless it has some special features or an unusual connection. I agree with Goony that you should keep it as an heirloom. I also suggest that you get a historical letter from S&W. It will give you a lot more information on things like when it was made, what grips were on it originally and where the factory sent it. Sometimes there are real gems in the info. If you aren't going to shoot it, put it into a display case or a gun stand and display it.

BTW, it appears to have the original nickel finish on it to me. The S&W logo and lettering are pretty sharp.
