39-2 Build Date

Hello! I was looking at my recently acquired 39-2 and I was wondering if anyone had an idea when it might have been made?
SN: 107226

Interestingly, it does not have an "A" prefix, also the "2" in the "39-2" is very small compared to others that I have seen pictures of. It also has the hole in the hammer, and longer "&". It also has the shorter extractor.

Any info or thoughts are appreciated! Please also excuse the extended barrel, Canadian gun laws...

Standard catalog of S&W (4th edition) says #115000 was produced in 1970. After that, serial numbers had an "A" prefix.

I would guess you have a true transitional mod-39 to a 39-2.
The smaller, hand stamped -2, I have seen a few times. As far as the absence of the "A" prefix, not a clue, other than somebody just forgot it or the inspector missed it. I would spring for a factory letter. Mike

Thanks everyone, yeah it is a bit odd, sounds like a factory letter is the way to go, glad to have an approximate manufacture date though!

It is a transition gun and was not supposed to have the A prefix. I've recorded six of them. There are also a few A prefix Model 39 (no dash) pistols.

P.S.: Certman: If uncomplicated was getting something from there (Oh, Canada) to here (The US of A), I would dearly love either buying that 107xxx at a nicer, improved-to-you price or trading it for one of my nicer "real" 39-2 Models or, even, digging deep into the chest and producing for trade a darn nice Model 39. However, I do have one New Englander with whom I've done business for many moons and he also does business in Canada. He might be able to help, for some level of remuneration, of course, and which I'd cover. So let me know via PM or email, both means are available in my profile info.

P.P.S.: Bork: On Sunday, I finally completed my annual Pre-39 cleanup - a little slower than desired but I ain't exactly movin' in the fast lane nowadays (the countering of which occasionally occurs in my M-Car; thank goodness I've got something that knows the word "hustle"). Should all go well, those little suckers will be posted later today - a week and some-odd behind initial schedule, but it is as it is.

That's very interesting, they were probably made at around the same time then, maybe even were in the factory together! I'll keep an eye out for your other pictures.

Yes, In an ideal world there would be no problems transferring these things through the borders, oh how I wish our laws were different lol, Canada can be truly vexing at times. I'll look into it and think on that, I do know that there are some hoops to jump through...
