3904 & 5904 Slide Swap

I got a 5904 S/N TLCXXXX made in 1991 to go with my 3904 S/N TETXXXX made in 1990. I tried to swap the slides but the slide from the 3904 would not go on the 5904 frame. The 5904 slide went on the 3904 frame without a problem. I thought the 3rd generation slides were all the same? The 5904 has adjustable sights and the 3904 has Novak sights which I plan to have changed to night sights. I had hoped to be able to interchange slides for range and occasional carry. There should be no problem with this switch. I have a 3904 with a fixed sight slide and another slide with adjustable sights and they interchange with no issues. The slides are the same between the single and double stack pistols.

I thought the same also. The slide from the 3904 will no go on the frame of the 5904 without force. Looking at the S&W parts cataloge there is reference to two different slides, one listed as R1. Looking in my S&W Catalog, I do not see any reference to any revisions in the 3rd generation slides. I hope to get the 5904 to the range in the next few days and see if it shoots as nice as the 3904. I love the single stack S&W's, but had to get the 5904 as a companion to my 3904.
