3913 Ejection Problems

I have a "new to me" S&W 3913. When I bought it the gun appeared almost new. The magazines were a little dirty.

The gun is clean, well oiled and greased. I took the magazines apart and cleaned them thoroughly. The base of the magazine spring is painted red (if that means anything). I could only get 7 rounds in two of the magazines.

On the 3rd to 4th round on each magazine, the empty will extract but not fully eject. I have shot Winchester White Box, Federal 115gr, and some Atlanta Arms 115gr bullets. Same results with each. Here is a picture.

What do you guys and gals think?

let somebody else shoot it before you start changing anything.

it could be limpwristing, a broken or defective ejector, weak extractor, weak recoil spring...i hesitate to say ammo issue because these guns eat anything you feed them.

let an experienced shooter (not saying you arent) try it out first.

Rolan, from what I'm seeing there it looks like it's not ejecting. If it were mine I would call Smith and order a couple ejectors , the new ones are a bit longer and there about $4 apiece at the same time I would get a few recoil springs and extractor springs since you'll be paying shipping anyway. If it don't work after that I'll be glad to take it off your hands. I got mine in 92 and broke a firing pin spring 05. Have a 639 bought used That gave me a few headaches, made a few changes and the last time it went to the range it did 700 rds with out a hiccup.

The ejector tip on my 639 broke off yet it continued to eject cases.
When I found the tip I knew where to look. Lock back the slide and look to see if the ejector is protruding through the breech face.

Might as well replace it if it is short or worn. It was the very first part to break on my gun.

Another check is to load two rounds and chamber one. Then pull the slide back slowly. If the extractor does not hold the case it will drop and hit the case mouth of the round in the magazine. This can be tried with just a case chambered or with the slide removed place a case into the extractor and see if there is enough tension to hold it in place.
