I do not have ProMags for my 3913 or 908S but have had some for a 5906. Haven't had any real problems but haven't really used them that much so not sure I can give an honest evaluation.

If you watch the ads here sometimes you can stumble across some originals for a decent deal and sometimes you get lucky on Ebay. I picked up some 3913TSW/CS9 mags at a decent price one time because nobody bid on them. Ended up being around $20.00 each. I think the bulk selling may have chased away other bidders.

I would NEVER buy promags again.

I have SIG P229 in .40.....Came with 1 SIG mag, I wanted more so I ordered 1 ProMag for it.....It jammed every round......I called them...They apologized....sent me another.....SAME exact issue.....Called them up......They refunded me and told me "go ahead and keep them"......I ended up throwing them away as thats all they were good for.

The Customer Service is GREAT Ill give them that.....but to me....if you sell a product...and a customer calls saying it doesnt work.....youd want it back....UNLESS you know "this is defective". To me the fact that they didnt want either of the mags back tells me they know their product was junk or else anyone could order the mag....call up for a refund or second mag and get 2 for free.

Just my opinion but Id never buy a Promag unless I had no other choice.

^^ Exactly.

I have a few friends who love Promag cause they are cheap and you can find them for "odd" guns sometimes....but they only use them for range use so they say.

If the ProMags I got worked okay-ish Id have used them for the range but every round was a double feed. No idea why.

Bought more SIG OEM mags....gun ran flawlessly.

If you can find a ProMag cheap enough......Give it a try and see.....You can always send it back...but I wouldnt expect it to work.

I tell people that Pro Mags are good for failure drills, but not much else.

I have a ProMag for my LCP that I bought before I knew about their poor reputation. It has been my daily carry backup mag for 5 years now, with probably 500 rds thru it. In my specific experience, it's been great.

That said, Dad bought some ProMags when he got his first 39-2, and they've been nothing but trouble. They've run poorly enough to turn both of us off from ever using them again.

I do hear its hit or miss, my issue is this is an item Im depending my life on.....so there cant be any question about reliability.

If we are taking about a gun that will be PURELY range use and you want some extra mags and want to take a chance go with ProMag as I said above......

However I personally would never trust a ProMag with my life......thus as long as I can avoid buying them....I will.

I have some promags that work fine and others that are junk. I only use them for range use. Mecgar is about the only aftermarket mag I trust.

As for the 3913 mags, hit the local gun stores/pawn shops and check out their used mag bins. Sometimes you can find a deal. I picked up 2 at one store for $15 each. They had one more, but I left for someone else. I had a 908, but after buying a 3913, I went back to see if the other mag was still there, got it for $10 out the door this time. Some of these stores really don't know what they have. Be patient and keep your eyes peeled, you may run across a deal.

I would totally agree on MecGar's or originals....

Interestingly for me a friend of mine got very worried about 8 ProMags he had for his Ruger 1911. He gave them to me and I have had NO problems with any of them.

Seems like this is about the only ProMag magazine that I have found to actually work and have stayed that way....go figure!

Check Robertson's Trading Post. I bought a couple factory mags there a couple months ago. I would call and talk to someone as you may get a slightly better price.

I grabbed a pair of OE mags from Numrich not too long ago. Two Pro Mags came with my 3913. Both of them will double feed on first round. All four of my SW mags run like champs. Range duty only for the ProMags.

I would not rely on a ProMag magazine for any sort of serious application and I would definitely not risk my life with one. Genuine S&W or MecGar mags are good for all uses.

I have used ProMag bodies with S&W guts in them with great success. In your situation, I would buy a Wolff spring and red S&W follower and stick them in your ProMag body, which I have done without issue. Since a spring and follower is less than $10 per mag it is a good investment.
I have some spare followers. PM me if you want a couple. You have to get springs yourself.

Squidsix, I was thinking of trying that. I'll just swap the guts over to one and try it out.

Its just a steel tube really. If it is built to the right measurements, it cant really go wrong. Their failing is in their spring and follower design. I found in only one case (ever) that ProMag's follower worked better than factory mags, and that was Kahr P-9. The factory mags failed to give slidelock on empty pretty often, and would leave a round in your mag pouch from time to time. The Promag for that pistol was much better, for me. I parted with the P-9 when I got my first 3913, And the rest is history.
Let us know how the S&W guts work in your ProMag. I expect it will be just fine.

Followers for the Promags needed to be forced out of the tube! With SW followers and springs in the Promag tubes things move with minimal effort. I haven't run them in the gun yet, but I anticipate they'll work much better!
Thanks for the tip!

I've just used factory or MecGar magazines in various pistols. I don't have "range" magazines. In years past I sometimes fooled around trying to get this or that magazine of dubious heritage to work reliably. No more, if a magazine becomes unreliable I pitch it. I have only used factory magazines in my 3913. They just work....ymmv

Your method is fine, BUT no reputable maker has made single-stack 9mm or .45 mags for Smith and Wesson. Your ONLY choices are factory or "questionable".
The method described above swapping the guts into an aftermarket mag tube is the best I have found.
Mec Gar never made a single stack S&W 3900 or 4500 magazine. Factory mags are a bit harder to find, and much more expensive. It has taken me years and thousands of dollars to amass the mags I needed for my collection of S&W pistols.
