The 3913 has been on my short list for years and I finally found a nice one a few months back. I like everything about it except for the ambi safety which seems to be an irritant. It functions fine but I dislike it hanging out the right side like that and bothering my trigger finger when it is indexed alongside the slide/frame area.

Is it possible to replace the right side safety lever with the blank plate from the other versions of the 3913?

Also, I've been reading through the various 3913 threads and noticed several folks mentioned installing a set of Hogue grips. What is the appeal of the Hogue grips, are they thicker or thinner than the stock S&W grips or maybe have a different texture?

Thanks

The Hogue grips are thicker rubber grips vs. the thinner plastic grips that are stock. As for the safety I know Smith will do the work but not sure what they charge. You may want to watch for a 3913NL or a 3913 Lady Smith as they are configured with the left side only safety. Of course the 3953DAO eliminates the safety entirely. But, I'm sure you know these things already.

I'm not getting why your trigger finger is bothered by the ambi-safety...it is nowhere near my trigger finger as I grip the gun with it being slide mounted...but if it bothers you it can be addressed.:)

There is not a blank plate where the ambi safety goes, that is just the barrel of the safety, as it goes all the way through the slide. You can easily swap your ambi for any third gen compact non ambi safety.....a full size will also work, but the lever is wider...I have a non ambi compact safety that I would gladly trade you.....

All great suggestions above
Or
Just press the release button and slide the right side lever off. Takes about 2 seconds to remove and about 5 seconds to return to stock. There is a small nub that sticks out a little past the slide but it essentially has become a single sided safety.

I'm looking for stock grips and would trade my Hogues for your stock ones.... ;)

The Houge grips are noticeable thicker with a 'tacky' rudder texture. I personally prefer the stock grips and will probably order a couple of pairs with the intention of stippling one of the two.

Non-ambi safety/decocker conversion

I did this swap on my 3913 and am pleased with the result. Strange as it seems, I also put a spurred hammer on it. Call me old fashioned but....
Anyway, going to the non-ambi decocker certainly slimmed it down a bit.

I bought a 3913 already altred from a forum member. He installed a 539 single side safety. It works great. He sent the original safety so I can always switch it back. It does make it much thinner. I also have a 3913NL that comes with right side only safety.

Thanks for the replies. Took advantage of grif684's kind offer and now the 3913 is equipped with a non-ambi safety. Looks good, works good, and fits in the DeSantis holster that came with the gun much better.

The gun came with three magazines, one of which has the finger rest floor plate. I'd like the finger rest floor plate on the other two as well. I see S&W and other sites have the mag with finger rest for $40 but I'm not seeing just the finger rest floor plate for sale. Midway might have them but their website is currently down. Are the floor plates available?

Thanks

You can get mags. at a lot of the gun shows..I picked up 2 early this month for $25 each, not a bad price.

I have bought the floor plates from Midway USA. They are out of stock right now but are due in soon.

I believe Brownell's sell the floor plates also, but they may be out.

My recently acquired 3913 came with three mags also, one of which had the pinky rest. I'm also planning to convert mine to a non-ambi safety.

Thanks guys.

Looks like Brownells carries them also but they are out as well. That's fine, put it on notify at midway and will get them when they come in.

Good idea to check the next gun show for a couple of additional magazines.
