Hi 3rd gen experts. Quick question. Can a
3913 be modified to DAO? Or should I just
Just keep looking for A 3953?

The 3913 can be modified, usually by installing a DA-only hammer or by modifying the original hammer.

A 3913 TDA (traditional double action, or, DA/SA) can be converted to DAO, but only using the new style DAO MIM parts. It won't be exactly like the original 3953 (different dimensions). This will result in a bit longer trigger pull because the new style DAO parts won't "locate" the hammer as far to the rear as the old style parts did.

The new style parts are MIM, and you CANNOT mix the old style machined/flash-chromed DAO parts and new style MIM DAO parts in a gun.

Using the S&W parts list, you can easily spend over $120 on the new MIM DAO parts.

FWIW, when you convert a TDA gun to DAO, it changes the order in which the disconnector & drawbar can be installed during assembly. (Presuming you're knowledgeable and experienced with detailed disassembly/assembly of 3rd gen guns.)

It might be the best of both worlds to keep the 3913 in its TDA format (if you already own one), and then look for a 3953 (or an 'original' 3953TSW).
