I've do not currently own either of these guns, but they are both on my "must have" list. Out of the two, which would you prefer as an everyday carry gun?

Strictly due to you living in Oregon, the 4040PD.

If, one had to face a Bear or Wolf, I'd rather have a .40 than a 9mm...
Human predators fall to 9mm & 40 equally well ;)

For the availability of magazines as well as caliber.

I've been carrying some form of 3913/14/NL since 1990 as my everyday carry +90% of the time.................

Got a Newsletter ..... don't know why I'm getting them.....Larry Vickers/Bill Wilson did a survey of "notable people in the firearms industry" to pick a pistol and ammo if you were buying your own.....15 names on the list: 1 picked .40 ....1 picked .45 and 13 listed 9mm as their choice.

Isn't the 3rd gen .40 cal and the 3rd gen 39XX basically the same size, except the .40 is a double stack and the 39XX are single stack? The 4013 and the 3913 that I had were the same except for the ammo capacity.

May be wrong; but the 4040PD, that I'm thinking of is a .40 cal built on the 3914NL frame and slide configuration.........7rds of .40.

In Compact 40s there was also a Chief's Special in .40 and the fairly common Shorty-40 from the PC......

I'm not a 40S&W guy and too lazy to dig out the SCS&W before my second cup of coffee.................

I have both and shoot the 40 better, dont know why
and regardless the 40 really swings the steel plates alot harder

I love the 4040PD, but for an EDC I would go with the 3913NL. I generally prefer 9mm for carry, and a 3913 of some sort would be easier to replace than a 4040PD. I'd also agree that magazines would be easier to find for the 3913.

Of course, if you can swing it, get both! :D

@Raladan - nice looking 4040 you've got there! I see you have the new KSD wood grips, and are those Meprolight night sights? If so, how do you like them on the 4040?

You are correct, the 4040PD is a slightly beefier slanted-dustcover 3913/14, holding 7 rounds of 40SW. It's a unique 3rd Gen all-around, being the only Scandium alloy frame, the only 40SW single-stack built on a 9mm frame, and (to my knowledge) the only non-TSW model with the loaded chamber barrel cutout. They're also milled for decock-only setup, straight from the factory.

Yes those are Meprolight sights, very bright and work well enough. Love the KSD grips. Been carrying this gun on and off since I got it new when they first came out.

Thank you, I've got some Mepros on a Kahr that I'm very happy with, but have always been curious about their offerings for S&W 3rd Gens. My 4040 has Trijicon SA15 night sights on it, and they have been very accurate for me. I know Meprolight has more of a 'universal' sight for 3rd Gens, but I do find their dots easier to acquire than Trijicon's.

I'm a big fan of the 4040PD myself, and it's my preferred carry when I want 40sw on the hip. Very concealable, manages recoil well, and I've found mine to be both accurate and reliable. I recently tried out tw25b grease and switched back to oil due to a noticeable increase in felt recoil. Even with a very lite coat on the rails, it still felt like my gun (and hand) was getting battered. Same thing with my Kahr K40.
