I took this classic out yesterday.

3914DAO, Houlton Maine manufacture. I don't think that it's a NYPD pistol. Got it here from a forum member a while back.

25 feet indoors. Two handed grip. No FTF/FTE issues. Freedom Munitions 124gr FMJ. 25 rounds fired in 5 - 5 shot strings.

Very happy with the results. The DAO trigger on this pistol is almost identical to my favorite 686's DAO trigger pull. I understand why some consider the 39xx series of pistols to be the finest CCW guns ever made.

Eventually I'll have to cull the herd. This will be one of the last to go.

Couldn't agree more!

That's great shooting first time out. I agree that the 39 series are among the very best that S&W offered in their respective times. I don't have a third generation (yet:D) but am on the lookout.

I used to think my Browning Hi-Power would never be replaced as my favorite 9mm semi, but then I fell into a Model 39-2 and indoors at 10 yards, it equaled the BHP for accuracy and I fell in love with the ergonomics.........so.......snagged a Model 639 and it performs just as great.

From your results it sure looks like I'll be pleased when I can add a third generation to my accumulation.

Added plus....it seems from on-line looks and this forum classifieds, that original mags might be easier to find than those 1st and 2nd gen ones.:D

I love my 3914DAO. Mine was NIB, but a bit gritty, so I had my local gunsmith (who was very familiar with S&W metal frame autos) do an action job on it. I view it as far superior to the Shield joke that replaced it, as do most people who shoot them side by side. Mine shoots 147 gr loadings to my preferred POA/POI relationship. I wish S&W would have done a 3" variant.

The CS9D would closest.

My 3914DAO was a NYPD gun. I bought it from a former NYPD officer who changed agencies and couldn't use the 3914DAO because it wasn't on their authorized list.

I asked him what the authorized ammunition per NYPD was and he told me 124gr. From my experience the 39xx guns shoot acceptable groups with either 124 or 147 grain ammunition. The 147 might be a touch better, but it's not a big difference.

Great shooting as always quikdraw. Great stuff also cmansguns. I like those targets. Glad you found something to put over the holes in the window. Does your wife approve of you shooting indoors. Just kidding, but I had to look for a minute to figure out what I was seeing.
