3rd Gen 10mm

I have finally joined the ranks of the S&W 10mm auto owners, thanks to another member here on the Forum. Took delivery today of a clean 1086. Been fondling, field stripping and dry firing so far but won't get to actually run any ammo through it until next week sometime.

Two things came as quite a surprise. First, although I've read over and over that the 10XX models were all "built like a tank", I didn't realize they weighed the same as a tank too! (LOL) I thought the Dan Wesson Pointman 7(10) was a heavy gun, at least heavier than the Colt Delta. I haven't put it on a scale yet but I'm willing to believe this 1086 is heavier than even that Dan Wesson. Second, I thought the trigger would be a bit longer in stroke and heavier in pull. What a surprise to find this is much nicer, and potentially more controllable, than I was expecting.

I'll try to report back with shooting results and some pictures after I get through a busy weekend of other stuff.

Congradulations on getting your S&W1086, yes they are on the heavy side but are very managable. I have seen velocities down about 40 to 60 fps as compared to the 5" barreled pistols. If you try shooting the higher performance ammo like that from Double Tap, Buffalo Bore, SwampFox, you may want to consider getting a Wolff extra power recoil spring. Look at the link...

S&W 1046- 5.00" barrel double action only,
S&W 1086- 4.25" barrel double action only, this pistol has to be partially cocked to be able to double action. By that I mean when you rack the slide to chamber a round the hammer remains partially cocked, there is NO DECOCKING FEATURE! Also the 1086 if you have a failure to fire you can not cock the hammer by squeezing the trigger a second time to fire. No Second Strike Capability. You would have to eject the round or move the slide rearward some to re-set the action to have the trigger cock the double action hammer again. Some models can be fired without the magazine present if the magazine disconnect is removed. Notice the tang looks smaller because the slide is longer in the rear, to cover the cocked hammer therefore the tang/beaver tail of the 1046/1086 looks shorter than the 1006/1066, 1026/1076.

The trigger on the early DAO models is so sweet because the hammer is already half-cocked by the action of the slide. With a little tuning they almost feel like a single action.

The tang looks smaller because the slide is longer in the rear, to cover the cocked hammer.

I would say I'm now on the look-out for a 1046 but from what I've read they make the proverbial "hen's teeth" seem common. And supposedly if you come across one it takes a co-signer and a lot of collateral to take possession. Guess I can hope to find the dumb guy who bought this very eccentric 10mm back in the early '90s and doesn't know what he has. Yea, like that's gonna happen (LOL).

Dave, The 1046 was a challange for me mentally and finacially. There was one which was only 20 miles away from me that sold on GunBroker (THERE IS A REASON FOR THAT NAME!) which sold for $3300 and another I was tracking went for $3100. Some angles smiled on me when I was offered the one I purchased...

Guess I should stop looking for un-explored gun shops and start looking for angles! (smile)

I too would like a 1046 to go with my 1086, but it sure is hard to justify all that money for just 3/4 inch more barrel.
I hate DA/SA autos. I like the simplicity of DAO and though I appreciate the advantages of a polymer pistol the single stack S&W third gens are my favorites. I've just got to get a 3953 or 4546/83/86 next.

I wasn't a 10mm fan until a 1006 and 1076 came on consignment at my local gun shop a few years ago. They were in lovely condition and very nicely priced, so I bought both. After shooting them for a few weeks, I started my hunt for a 1066 in the same condition to complete the trifecta. It took several months, but I finally found one in 99%+ condition that a dealer had at my local gun show. It was priced at $700 which was too high, so I pulled out $550 and said, "This is for out the door." He took it, which made me very happy.

My first 10mm was a 1006 with adjustable sights. They were still making them back then, and I sold it figuring I could just buy another. That pattern has seemed to repeat itself. Anyway, it took a few years but I ran across a nice 1076 and grabbed it. I even CCW'd it for a while. Heavy, but with a good belt and decent holster, they actually carry pretty nice.

Several years went by. I had gone through a Colt Delta Elite simply because it sat in my safe and I never did anything with it. Nice gun, but someone else wanted it more and he was going to send it off to one of the top smiths who's name eludes me now. I figured it was a better fate than sitting in my safe, and I needed dough for something lame, so I sold it off.

A few more years ago, I ran across a 1066 at the gunshow. At first I thought it was a 1076, then I spotted the safety switch. Some guy was holding it, looking at it, so I had to bide my time. The second he left I grabbed that sucker. It was indeed a 1066 and in great shape. I flipped the price tag over and it had $350 on it. Yeah, I didn't set it down.

Only a year later, I found a 1006 with fixed sights for $300 at the same show. They had taken it as trade and were just trying to get rid of it quickly. I helped them out as fast as I could.

Of the three, I like the 1066 the best overall. The 1076 second. The shorter 10's seem to balance a little better for me. Just right, though at $300 I've learned pretty fast to fall in love with the longer 1006 all over again..lol.

Darn, you guys have me wanting to search out another 10mm.

The S&W DAO trigger is IMO the best DAO trigger around. Most guns that are DAO are just traditional SA/DA guns without the SA. S&W's DAO is just so much better than a conventional DA pull.
