Can a 3rd gen double action be easily/readily converted to DA/SA? Or is it just too cost prohibitive?

I think the slides on the DAO pistols are a bit longer in the rear. I don't think it's as simple as changing the hammer and adding safety levers.

Depends on vintage.

Hello dueeast,

Later 3rd gen. autos starting with the introduction of TSW autos can be switched back and forth between DAO and DA/SA by switching parts while earilier DAOs used parts unique to early vintage DAOs. Early DAOs have slides and frames that are longer in the rear. You can tell which type you have by compareing how close your rear sight is to the back of your slide to pictures of DA/SA guns. All 3rd Gen. autos have their rear sight dove tail cut over their firing pin safety lock plunger so the extra slide length behind an early pre-TSW DAO's sight is obvious.

Best Regards,
Gil

Not to high-jack the thread, but this brings up a similar question.
Can the later 3rd gens, specifically a 4513TSW be converted (or perverted, depending on your opinion) so the safety / de-cocker can operate as a safety in the single action mode?
Giving you 4 modes of readiness.
1) single action, safety off.
2) single action, safety on.
3) double action, safety off.
4) double action, safety on.
The H&K and Taurus guns operate this way and still have a functional de-cocker.
The 4513TSW has modes 1, 3, and 4 above.

Once I put a DA/SA slide on a DAO frame and "made" a (ugly) DAO gun with a safety. Didn't shoot it but I saw no reason it wouldn't work. Maybe someone smarter has a different opinion on that though.

At the same time I put the DAO slide on a DA/SA frame and "made" a hammer.

One could remove the decocking lever and have a S/A safety on, but there wouldn't be a safe way to decock the gun. It would allow you to pull the trigger and drop the hammer on the safety, something that just bugs the hell out of me with the PC S/A guns and the Walther P22. I would just as soon have the safety lock the trigger myself.
