Recently bought a 1006 that has been on my bucket list. After a full tear down, special sauce blast and reassembly, I noticed the extractor was loose, appears to be bent out slightly on the tail end. No real pressure from the spring. Looked around to see if maybe I had lost a shim, but couldn't find any. I haven't shot the gun yet, so no idea if it was a problem. Numrich and the other usual suspects are out of stock for the 10mm extractor. The 4013/4053 is available, but is a different part number. The only physical difference I could see was the 4013 has a bevel on the outside of the edge of the extractor instead of a sharp edge on the 1076/1006 examples I have. That difference seems non-functional to me. Will the 4013 extractor work on the 1006? I shimmed the 1006 and the tension seems correct on the extractor now, but I want to know my options on replacing the extractor if it bends more thru normal use. If I have function issues, I may ship it to the mother ship to see if they will replace the extractor.

Thanks,

Rosewood

2nd question.

Recently bought a 6906 slide used for parts. It didn't have a barrel, but it takes the narrow hood barrel. Thought about fitting it to my 6904 so I would have a stainless slide. Found a barrel on clearance but when it got here it is the .395 wide hood. Would it be as easy as milling the hood the the proper dimension to work on the narrow hood slide? I don't see any reason why it wouldn't but thought maybe you guys might know something about it that isn't obvious to me.

Thanks,

Rosewood

Not trying to hijack, but can you post a pic showing where to measure to determine whether it’s a wide or narrow hood?
I have several 6900 series barrels from parts kits. It’d be handy to know which is which:)

Here u go. The narrower one is like .260" I think.

Extractor bent like this?

No fixing that, need to have a new extractor fitted.

There's a seller on the big general stuff auction site that has some and in a pinch a 4013 part can be used if there's nothing else. I would not expect S&W to have the parts on hand anymore. My preference would be to run a proper 10xx extractor but I would not have issue with using a 40xx part if there's no other option. Make sure you have a OEM factory spring under the tail. Some wonky aftermarket spring could be at fault for the bend. Likewise check for any junk or shims stacked in the spring bore. If the spring bore is short for the spring and it stacks solid when the extractor pivots, that'll result in a bend too.

re: the 6906 tube, yes the wide hood can be fit to the narrow slide. Measure the gap on the host slide. Subtract that value from the width of the wide hood. Divide the result by two then take that value off each side of the hood. That will leave you with a tight interference fit which will require some additional fitting by hand to achieve a snug but smooth drop in fit.

Cheers

Yep, just like that. Couldn't find any shims or crud to push it out. But maybe I washed it out and didn't notice.

I added 3 #1 washers to shim and it seems about perfect, but am afraid it might get worse over time.

Thanks

Checked my stash. I have two narrow hood barrels if you need one.

I appreciate it, will just probably cut the one I have. Really want to make a spare top end for either my 3913 or 6904 if I ever need it. Time we pay shipping for the barrel, it was no longer a good deal. :) Besides, I enjoy the fitting process.:D

Thanks,

Well sometime u don't know what u bought. Went to install rear sight in the 6906 slide and the site wouldn't fit. Guessing this is a pre-novak slide?? Is it as simple as milling off behind the sight so the novak fits? Is the dovetail the same angle and depth?

Thanks,

Rosewood

I tell you, having the bead blast cabinet setup with the special sauce makes working on these stainless 3rd Gen Smiths a breeze. Once you make the changes, you blast it and voila, it looks factory. That slide was semi-polished when I received it. Now it looks like a brand new slide.

Done!

Now I have questions about fitting the slide to an aluminum frame. I can't just work the slide to fit it. How do u fit the slide rails? Small file?

Thanks, Rosewood

Check that you have "pushed" the extractor pin deep enough. If you leave it a bit out, it can "rub" on the frame making it impossible to get in pass that point.

I checked that when I put it together. It was actually tight on both my 3913 and 6904 frame before I took it apart. I just double checked to make sure, and it is below flush.
