The list is pretty extensive. If you are just looking for an easy way to ID a third generation S+W, they have a 4-digit model number. (1st generation models 2-digits. Second gen. 3-digits)

10xx 10mm
22xx .22 rimfire
39xx 9mm single stack
40xx .40 caliber
45xx .45 caliber
59xx 9mm double stack full size
69xx 9mm double stack compact

xx0x TDA full size
xx1x TDA compact
xx2x Frame decocker full size
xx3x Frame decocker compact
xx4x DAO full size
xx5x DAO compact
xx6x TDA mid size
xx7x Frame decocker mid size
xx8x DAO mid size
xx9x Non standard combination

xxx3 Alloy frame silver
xxx4 Alloy frame black
xxx5 Steel frame blue
xxx6 Stainless steel frame
xxx7 Non standard combination

There are also some 3rd gen guns that have just 3 numbers. They include the econo-line and some PC .45's.

6906 has an aluminum alloy frame and should have been a 6903.
I think that there are a couple more with a non-standard number designation.
Go figure.

Heres a pic of my collection of 1st , 2nd and 3rd gen S&Ws ...you know , strictly as a visual aid .

Actually, I think the 6906 should really be called a 5913. S&W must have named this gun before they standardized 3rd gen nomemclature.

The 39xx and 59xx designations are carry overs from the 1st Gen model 39 (single stack 9mm) and 59 (double stack 9mm).

Nice collection pic there,

I have a 6906 and like it. I had a 659 but sold it when I was down on my luck. I have been bugging the guy I sold it to let me buy it back but he will not sell it.

Thanks again for the help.

Clang-
based on Kurt's chart I believe you and bad_man_one are both wrong about the 6906. (Although a 5913 would probably sell pretty well!)

A 6906 should really be a 6913.
69xx = double-stack compact
xx1x = TDA compact
xxx3 = alloy frame silver.

I find it interesting and curious. Any other model numbers that don't match? I wonder what the reasons were for the differences?

I'm pretty certain that the 6906 predates both the use of the 3rd digit to designate a compact and the use of xxx3 to designate an alloy frame with stainless slide (the choice of alloy or steel frames within the same series came later).

Smith & Wesson fine tuned the numbering system as they added more calibers and options but the 69xx continued to use the original numbering (even for later variants like 6926 and 6946).

5913 would be the appropriate model number if it had been updated to the final system.

Wouldn't the 6913 be the proper matching nomenclature.
59xx 9mm double stack full size
69xx 9mm double stack compact

Several 3rd Gen pistols are 3 digit numbers.
410 - 40 S&W
411 - 40 S&W
908 - 9mm
910 - 9mm
Just to name a few...

No, 6913 is redundant. It's combination of two different methods that S&W used to designate a compact.

Only the double stack 9mms used a seperate series to designate a compact because it was hold over from the 2nd Gen 469 and 669. When S&W introduced later compact pistols of other series, they simplified their numbering system and used the third digit to designate compact. Had the 6906 been numbered under the later system, it would have been a 5913 and the 69xx series wouldn't have existed.
