We all know and see how the 3rd Gen firearms are increasing in value, for the most part. IMHO, I think they will become almost extinct one day, driving their value beyond comprehension.
Any opinions or thoughts as to how the M&P will fare in the future, or may even compare with how the 3rd Gen has fared through time?
I don't see the M&P holding or increasing in value as compared to how the 3rd Gen has.

Nope. There is something special about the 3rd gens. While the M&P's are great guns, there is really nothing that special about them.

Honestly, I don't see any "plastic" guns increasing in value (in constant dollars) in the same way that most metal ones have. I am not "anti-plastic guns" at all, but to me it's just not the same high-value and/or historically significant collectible animal.

Having missed the Gen 3 era entirely due to life circumstances mostly outside my control, I am now trying to play catch-up and am finding that Gen 3's were and are a terrific investment. Too bad for me that I missed the boat the first time around. It's not going to be easy nor cheap to play catch-up.

Me too!! Being young poor and stupid is almost as bad as old and stupid!!:)

no it's not...not even close...old and stupid proves you can't or won't change....besides..being an EMT ...proves you are not;)....as far as M&P's compared to 3rd. gens???....I think 3rd. gens will go the way of 1911's.....to an extent...:cool:not as iconic.....do you have a bumper sticker on the magnum that says "my other car is a helicopter":D

After I awoke this morning, I started thinking that I did not give the 1st & 2nd Gen firearms a fair shake in this comparison. Please take these into consideration also.

As with most collectables, the things that end up the most valuable are the things nobody thought were good when new. I wasn't a S&W fan when the 3rd generations were in production but in reading here it seems they might not have been really embraced at that time and that is what is going to make them valuable. Like a fine wine, a little age brings with it an appreciation of how well done these pistols were made. Like rock beats paper, metal beats plastic.
Happy 6906 owner.

I don't forsee a time when an M&P will bring what was originally paid for it, much less appreciate in value like a 3rd gen gun.

In this state, NC, LE agencies are already dumping the m&p and either going back to their previous model duty gun (NCSHP Sig), or buying Glocks instead (Durham PD). I understand Atlanta PD dumped them as well.

The m&p has not been in service long enough to already need replacement. These changes are due to reliability and durability issues with the m&p pistols. According to the NCSHP and Atlanta PD anyway.

S&W 3rd gen pistols do not suffer from reliability or durability issues and will continue to appreciate in price. Regards 18DAI

There will always be a market for the smith 3rd gen pistols, but I don't believe the market will be very good for the M&P line. My .02
