3rd Generation CCW

I really can't add anything here; so many before me have said it very well! I will say this, though: the only reason I carry a poly pistol is because I would hate to be involved in a bad scenario & have one of my beloved 3rdGens rattling around in an evidence locker. Otherwise, I would be carrying my 4513TSW. It's the six shot, early non rail model, very light & easily concealable. I might start carrying it yet!

I carry what makes me feel safe. I have given zero consideration to having my pistol locked up in evidence.

I agree. I'm fortunate to live in a state where if I ever have to use a gun for self defense, it will not be taken for evidence. EVERY gun I have will be taken, all my ammo, my magazines, my license will be suspended, and chances are I'll be arrested.

Therefore, I don't worry about my 3913 being in an evidence locker because it will have plenty of company.

Should I be worried about any part failures, being almost 30 years old.
Anything mechanical can break down, but it's not a piece of fruit ;) that will 'go bad' merely due to time. Use will cause wear, and wear will cause parts to eventually fail; some more quickly than others.

Should I get it broke down by a Gun Smith and have him replace all the springs and check other parts for wear ? Or am I being overly concerned and these guns will last a lifetime ?
It wouldn't hurt, and if it gives you peace of mind then you'll have that. When I got my 1076 a couple years ago I bought it for carry, so I sent it in to S&W to give it the once-over. Now when I'm carrying it I worry less about those more fragile parts; although I wasn't *really* all that worried to begin with.

Repeat after me...
"Hey, that's my only pistol, how am I supposed to protect myself
if you take it away?? (wait) I wanna receipt for that..."
;)

My Question is this this. A lot of the 3rd generation Autos are approaching 30 years of age. I would like to take one of these in my collection and carry it every day. There are some lingering concerns of mine. Let me start by saying, I have never had a single jam in any of my 3rd generations. I am a big fan of these pistols. Getting to the point, Should I be worried about any part failures, being almost 30 years old. Should I get it broke down by a Gun Smith and have him replace all the springs and check other parts for wear ? Or am I being overly concerned and these guns will last a lifetime ?

What do you call an old guy with an old gun??
The one old phart you don't wanna mess with ;)

The great thing about knowing exactly how a particular firearm
is going to act & react is invaluable...
so if you know your pistols well, it gives you an undeniable edge :)

This is why all my CC's have been setup for 6-O'clock holds...
and my tendency to shoot a hair left with .45acp & 10mm...
so no matter what I grab hold of, they all fire to the same POA...

All-metal pistols have a serious saving grace,
pretty much never need anything except springs...
maybe a minor part or two like an extractor, ejector,
or a mag catch...
once you have a few spares, you're set for your lifetime :D
And if all else fails, a REAL gunsmith can make any parts needed
by hand.

Carry whatever you feel confident with.
1- keep it clean/lubed
2- keep it maintained
3- keep in within arms reach

. . .
My comment was mainly based on esthetic value. Maybe I value my 3rdGens more...

If I ever purchase a 3rd Gen in ratty condition I might not care about getting it dinged & scrapped up, or worse, but fortunately all my 3rd Gens are in great shape & I plan on keeping them that way too. Their aesthetics is part of their allure for me. :D

If you run out of bullets....they make a great bludgeoning device.

Exactly. Nice looking, all metal firearms are quickly becoming a thing of the past.
Likewise, put me in the "too pretty &/or too valuable to carry" column except for my "used & abused" CS40, which I plan to dump at some point anyway. I am a firm believer that cheap, plastic throw-away pistols were invented just so we wouldn't have to put our valuable, highly-prized "all-metal" 3rd Gen pistols at risk. :)

And yes... even though I've been accused of just buying cheap "beaters" selling on GA or GB, the fact is that my "plain vanilla" 3rd Gens are a real treasure to me. Not every one of them is pristine perfect in original box... but overall, their condition is pretty damn good. They are valuable to me and prized by me even if they aren't prestigious PC guns. :p

I have ABSOLUTE confidence in either my 40 Shield or my 40c. My comment was mainly based on esthetic value. Maybe I value my 3rdGens more than you...whatever.

Maybe I think my 6906 is one of many safe and reliable self-defense guns that I own and carry, especially considering the various lengthy threads on this forum about the failings of the Shield. Maybe I value my . . . Whatever

Maybe I know that with 400 plus rounds through my Shield without a problem my confidence is well placed, because I don't use overcharged reloads in a self defense gun. It carries a lot easier than my 6906, another good thing about the Shield, but yes, whatever...

Some bizarre logic in this thread,......

It takes roughly 30yrs for a pistol to prove its reliability and durability, so I thank those before me who risked their lives carrying these guns 'untested'. I figure they're now ripe for CC. You other guys can prove out the plastic pistols for the next generation if you want.

And I can't quite wrap my mind around the thought of carrying a new plastic pistol to save wear and tear on a more durable and less expensive pre-owned metal pistol. I understand the throwaway aspect of plastic, but am having trouble with the concept that throwing away $500 worth of plastic is somehow preferable to wearing the finish on $400 worth of metal. Now if the new plastic pistols were cheaper than used metal pistols I suppose it might make sense to me but I haven't found that to be the case.

BTW, I don't hate any of the 30 or so plastic pistols I own,.......I just don't understand the logic presented in these posts.

My recent foray into 3rd Gen S&W has left me with:

  • A really nice looking 3913
  • A so-so looking 5904 with adjustable sights
  • A beat-up looking 6906 with fantastic trigger

I carry the 6906 every chance I get.:)
I'm going to use the 5904 in IDPA matches.:D
I'm going to carry my 3913 on special occasions.

If money becomes available, I may buy a 908 to carry in summer, but the 6906 is darn near equivalent in ease of carry.
