After reading that the 3900 and 6900 slides are interchangeable, I had a strange thought. I figured I'd run it by someone with more experience with the 3rd Gen S&Ws...

If I buy a 6946 and swap the slide onto a 3913, will my 3913 function as a 3953, or is there more to making it a DAO than just the inner workings in the slide?

Likewise, will the 6946 with a 3913 slide function as a 6906?

There's more to it than that, and I wouldn't swap slides if I were you. The frame and slide need to be timed. Even swapping slides on the same model - like, say, a pair of 39-2's - can result in damage.

Ask me how I know...

I'd consult with Smith, and if they say it can be done - send the pieces to them and let them do it...

The slide merely decides whether or not the pistol will have a safety. It is the contents of the frame that decide whether it is DA/SA or DAO.

On pre-TSW guns, the frame and slide are longer in the rear on DAO models than on DA/SA models. If you mix and match them, they won't be even in the rear.
