I was in the Cabelas south of Minneapolis today - the gun room had a very nice blue 3" Model 19 (-2 I believe) that they were asking $4,695 for.

Hope this info doesn't start a stampede...

I've seen this piece listed on one of the auction sites. Absolutely ridiculous price -- isn't even in perfect condition.

There's such a thing as overpricing an item and hoping, but I don't know what these people are thinking...

Not really. I saw one at the last gunshow here for about $500.

It is my understanding that the 3" M-19's were a special order by the state of California for their narcotics officers, and somewhere between 1,500 -2,000 were produced.
I'm guessing that some of the other posters have confused the 2 ½" version with the 3" version offered for sale. Scarce or not $4,700.00 for what appears to be a well-used revolver appears to be pricey.

consignment sale...someone had to smoke something to come up with that price.

i would like to have a 3" 19, and they are definately hard to find

I've never purchased a gun from C's, but I've surfed their listings before. From what I see on their website, I think their prices are generally absurdly high for most of their guns.

After looking at Cabela's prices I don't believe its just their gun prices that are high, but also the employees that come up with them.

"Corrosion, freckles, buggered screws" Even if NIB,I know of no gun shop that indulge the lunacy of a consignor to that extent,or waste their own time and shelf space with that gun.My LGS certainly won't.They want a realistic selling price, want to knock down the price in a month or two,to move it along.

Model 19s with a 3-inch barrel are rarely seen. In 2005, part of the collection of a S&WCA member was auctioned to members only. I bid $2,500 on each of the two Model 19s with a 3-inch barrel and was not the high bidder on either one. Maybe the price listed is too high for the condition of the revolver described above, but I am sure 19s with a 3-inch barrel are valued at over $3,000.

No confusion here between a M19 2.5" and a 3"; I'm well aware of what a rare bird it is. That price is still beyond absurd for the item, even if it were in excellent condition with box, papers and tools.

Which it's not. And they're still asking near $5,000.

One of the fixed-sight guns or adjustable sights? It's only worth that when ONE collector will pay that for it, but that is all it takes. :)

For me, I'm with Art. A 3-inch 19 might be a nice toy for those of us who are mainly shooters. We can figure out how to get one if we have to have one. :D

Cabelas has a lot of trouble pricing their merchandise. Each location prices independently of the others, and they are very inconsistent. Many times they are way over or way under priced. This is due to a lack of knowledge in their staff. You can pick up some great deals if you get in fast. The problem is that many astute buyers are aware of their shortcomings. They post a lot of guns on gunsinternational.com. Good luck to all.

I posted on a M19-3 6" blue I saw at the Cabela's west of St. Louis while at the NRA Convention. This one was cherry, full target with the original box in 98% or better condition. it was marked $500 and I was the only one that even noticed it with the counter full of customers. The price was very fair and I should have gotten it, but figured that they would not know how to treat a non resident with an FFL. Bob!

Model 19

I'll never be a serious collector. When 2.5s,4 inchers, and 6 inchers abound for reasonable money,(not to mention that a stainless version of the same gun is still a sub 1000 gun) the fact that a handful have an intermediate barrel length variant, would not induce me to pay that kind of premium. That kind of fundage should be destined for an engraved gun,or RM,or special antique.
I realize that supply and demand kicks in,some must have the rare for their own desire or so that someone else doesn't have it,but we're merely talking about a half inch of tube.

The Owatonna location isn't the only one with insane prices. The Lacey, WA store shows a Registered .357 Magnum with Gonalo Alves stocks, 5" barrel, no box or documentation, for the princely sum of $7,399.99. There are a couple of others for sale at others for quite a bit less money, but none worth the prices they are asking.

MAYBE if this M-19 was PROVEN to be one made for the French President's bodyguard, it might be worth that much.

I sure wouldn't pay that for one made for the CA narcotics people.

As a user, I'd buy the M-66 version, anyway. For well under a thousand, in nice shape.

Pictures of my 3" Model 19 vs my 2 1/2" Model 19

You don't have to spend thousands to get a 3" Model 19.

For those of you having trouble, the 3" Model 19 is the top picture.

Yep, I can tell that price is too high because I definitely wouldn't trade my three $1,480 Model 28-2's for it!

Damn! Guess I missed that one. They usually mark their guns at about twice what they are worth. Saw a 5" RM in Cabela's in Wichita in fair condition priced at $7999. No expert on RM's, I thought it was overpriced by about $4000-$5000.

+1 on that! I picked up my excellent 2.5" 66-4 for $350 plus tax. They had no idea what they were selling.
