This one was the wild card and an unexpected surprise from the Waco auction.

The auction photos showed an odd grey appearance that wasn't really very appetizing. These were the only two pictures:

I have a weakness for 4" pre-24's, so I put a "maybe no one else will show up" pre-bid on it and forgot about it. There were a total of 3 pre-24's in the auction and this was the one I wanted least. Lo and behold, when auction day rolled around the other two went for more than I wanted to spend (I was holding onto my cash for the King Triple Lock), but the ugly duckling sold for less than half of the other two. My low ball pre-bid held and I got this one for $1,150.

I was expecting an ugly gun to show up and when I walked into my FFL and saw the 3 sitting on the counter my first thought was "They shipped the wrong one". Here it is in real life:

It's been refinished with a pretty heavy hand on the buffer but it appears to have been done well. IF it has been fired since the refinish it wasn't shot much. There is barely any turn ring and the recoil shield is not marked at all other than from opening and closing the cylinder. Even the ejector rod is unmarked.

Timing and lockup are perfect and the trigger is wonderful. No gooey sticky feeling here! I don't do safe queens so this bad boy is going to the range today.

I said before that I have a weakness for pre-24's. Here's a family shot of the Ugly Duckling with his 4 brothers.

It looks like the money I saved on the gun will be going towards another set of non-relieved diamond targets. ;)

Nice revolver acquisition. You got a good deal, and that excellent .44 Special went to a good home!

And, great job with the photos, on this post and your others.

It's a shooter! Here are the first 6 shots to see where the sights were, 15 yards, two hands, using my chronograph tripod with a small sandbag on top to steady my forearms.

...and then 2 cylinders full at 7 yards, two handed, as rapid as I can do with a .44 and still keep it relatively tight. I didn't have the timer running but I went at my bowling pin pace which is usually just over 1 second per shot. This one will go to the next pin match for sure.
