I saw a 38 M&P today with a square butt, 2" barrel, 4 screw frame no model # with the round front sight. I thought they went to ramp front sights in the early 1950's??? Somebody straighten me out.

ya mean something like this ?

Ramp sights transitioned away from the half moon in the early 50's but initially after the war they were "round"

Are you counting the number of screws correctly, four on the sideplate (one under the stock horn) and no screw in front of the trigger guard? You are correct that the half-round sight went away in the 1950s, 1952 as I recall. Only 5-screw frames should have that front sight.

A photo would be helpful! Is it possible that what you have is a gun someone modified the ramp front sight to resemble the early half-round style?

Is there a serial number on the bottom of the barrel? If so, does it match the serial number on the gun butt?

Actually, the half-round front sight on the 2" M&P hung around a bit longer than it did on the longer barrels. You might very well see 2" M&P revolvers with that sight well into the mid-1950s. So, it is possible to have a four screw frame with the half-round sight on a 2" barrel.

I didn't notice a serial number on the barrel. It's definitely a 4 screw and if the front sight was modified I couldn't tell. It had a good bit of blue loss and wear. I guess a barrel swap is most likely.
