Just bought a 40 M&P recently and notice a little "rattle" when I put the mag in and turn the gun from side to side. Also notice that the mag isn't completely flush with the bottom of the handle. I have 2 mags and both seem to fit the same way and have the same issue.

She fires just fine and I'm confident it will serve me if I ever need it. Just wondering if this is normal or something that needs to be addressed ASAP?

Thanks in advance!

"rattle"

OK. Your post made me get out some M&P's. My 40 and 9 don't rattle, the 45 does. I have never thought about it.

The small gap at the base-plate is normal on all of mine. I have never thought about that either.

So, I tried to rattle some other pistols. The only ones that are silent are the 1911's. Now that is something I have thought about. As I recall, all the 1911's I ever came in contact with while in the service would really rattle.

My wife is now wondering why I was pulling guns from the safe and shaking them.

Take care.

Haha..Yeah, been making the wife a bit nervous here too. Chambering, unchambering, adding and removing rounds from the mag to see if it stops. Occasionally it stops but no real rhyme or reason. Seen some people say odd #'s of rounds or under 12 rounds in the mag stops it.

Thanks for the reply though:) I can deal with the little rattle here and there as long as the gun works:)

Yep, mine has that infamous rattle when the magazine is full(15rds) of 40S&W. I noticed also that it does not rattle when loaded to full capacity of 357Sig. Go figure.

Double stack mags will sometime rattle. With the mag full and not in the gun, a simple tap in the palm of your hand should settle all the space between the rounds that cause the rattle....or just ignore it.

Bought my M&P 40 two weeks ago and mine do the same thing. Mine came with 2 15 rd mags and they both rattle whether in the gun or out. Looks like # 6, 8 and 10 bullets in both mags are "loose". Dont mind so much, but its disheartening that so well a manufactured gun rattles when you pick it up.

It is not unusual for a double stack magazine to rattle. My 9mm Kel-tec P11 mags rattle as well. Sometimes giving the side or back of the loaded magazine a good rap against the palm of your hand will seat the cartridges and stop the rattle. It also seems to be worse with some brands of ammo than others I'm not sure why. Maybe some ammo is slipperier than others and the cartridges seat themselves more easily.

As Deadeye Dick points out, the rattling is not uncommon. I think it's most common on 45's and 40's. My Springfield Xdm rattles in any of the five magazines I have for it. As mentioned, sometimes a good slap--I find that hitting the butt of the grip upwards works for me, but nothing's going to stop my double stack 45's magazines from rattling around. Honestly, it annoys me a little bit if I'm carrying in public and I hear bullets rattling in the loaded magazine, but that's the nature of the beast.

I don't feel THAT bad, as Les Baers and Kimbers costing twice as much, do the same thing. Not that the Glock pistol is any better than an M&P (in my opinion and I shoot both) but for some reason, I don't get rattling in my Glock factory magazines--they do make some really good magazines--so does Sig Sauer.

I have an M&P .40 that's just over a month old also. I have 1 mag that rattles and 1 that does not. Both 15 rounds. I can rap the mag against my hand to try to seat the rounds but this will not stop that one from rattleing. I'm gonna take it down & clean it to see if that helps.

Other than that it's not a real problem, I do not hear the rattle when it's in the gun.

Any one that doesn't like there 15 round mags can give them to me :)

I'm stuck with these darn MASS 10 round mags :) , not happy.

Hopefully we can get the idiot law makers out and get some in that will change that law (ya right, in MASS :) ).
