I was trying to compare ammo prices between 9mm & .40 S&W yesterday. I just picked up a S&W 4040PD. It seems like .40 S&W is running about 1.5 times the price as comparable 9mm. Does that seem like an accurate assessment?

I don't follow .40 ammo prices that closely but it seemed to me that .40 popularity is on a decline and ammo prices are or were cheaper than 9mm. Maybe all the ammo makers have reduced production of .40 so supply and demand pricing has taken over.

Typically I see quality 40 S&W less expensive for everything except the cheapest 9mm range fodder...

But, I reload: so I don't need to partake.

Cheers!

yes. 12/50 for 9 is pretty common, and 18/50 for 40 ball is about right. Just get spare recoil springs and change them often, maybe every 2K rounds. Don't want to crack the frame, even if it is scandium. Wolff sells them in 3 packs.

At least 50% more than 9mm is the price of most centerfire handgun ammo. Try comparing 40 to 38 Special or 357 Magnum and it looks like a bargain. Its about the same price as 380 and each round uses a lot more lead and more brass and powder than 380.

During the 2014 ammo shortage it seemed like 40 was the only thing available and less expensive. Probably due to a lot of police departments switching to 9mm which reduced demand but ammo makers still cranking out 40 like it was as popular as it was 10 years earlier. But those days are over.

One of the popular ammo search sites show 40S&W for $13-$14 per box. Some may include free shipping for quantity purchase. My LGS's and other local big box are more in the $20 per box range.

.40 and .45

.40 and .45 seem to be around the same price at most places near me. Lower end stuff around 23/50 and your wwb and federal running about 28/50. Bear in mind these are prices at my lgs near me. Hollow points in my area are about the same as 9mm(20-30/20round box) depending on brand.

In stores, cheapest I have seen on 40 was $19.99 and that was a sale. Most places are $25 and up. 9mm is routinely found for around $15 per box. I have not seen any $12 box in stores around here. As someone else said, .380 and 38 special are more expensive than 40. Not so many years back 38 special was the cheapest factory ammo you could fine.

Yeah, I know you can buy cheaper online in bulk.

9mm has now become the most popular pistol cartridge and the .40 S&W is shrinking. While it is a great round for SD, many agency's and even private citizens have switched back to 9mm because of several reasons, one of them being the cost of the ammunition for practice. Another reason is that some configurations of .40 is hard to find these days while 9mm is all over the place. Of course another important factor is controllability and recoil - just harder to control than a 9mm. Some also like the increased magazine capacity of the same model gun but in 9mm.

If you plan on keeping and using the .40 for SD, stock up when ever you can get ammo at a good price - or start reloading for Range session ammo.

You nailed it. My brother has been a .40 fan for 20+ years. It has always been 150% of 9mm.

I am .45 guy and it is just a little higher than .40. Being a cop I had already been carrying .45 ACP when the .40 S&W (Short & Weak) came out in the early 1990s, so I never had an interest.
