My local P.D. traded in a bunch of 4006's two or three years ago and I was able to pick one up from my LGS for a good price last night.

The gun is about 90-95% with matching case and three 11 round mags. Looks to have been fired very little, which i suppose is to be expected. Judging by how beat up and holster worn some of them were I'm guessing they've been around a while.

Does anybody have serial # info on these? Mine is KHP24xx.

Thanks, Kyle.

Are you sure the first letter is a "K"?
I've never seen a S&W semi-auto serial# starting with K.

I'm quite sure it's a "C". CHP24XX for example... All the ones I've seen all started with "CHP"

Pretty sure it's KHP I'll double check when I get home this evening.

I'm certain it's not CHP, wasn't that just the California Highway Patrol guns?

Just double checked the serial # it is KMF24xx. I was at work when I posted this thread and was going off of a poor cell phone photo of the gun. Hence my confusion.

If it would help to get a ball park estimate it has the MIM trigger/hammer and a plastic cap on the bottom of the hammer strut, my last 4006 had a steel cap. It also has night sights, I don't know if those were available from the beginning or not.

Original case has a product code of 148422

And a Spec. Order # 8422

I understand it may not be possible to date this pistol like it is earlier S&W's but I thought it might be worth a shot.

The spec ord code is usually the date of manufacture using a Julian calendar. The first number is the year and the last three numbers are the day of that year.

In this case 8 would be 1998 but 422 is obviously in excess of the available days of the calendar!

Can you post some pic's. The pistol and the box end label?
As I said above I've never seen a S&W pistol with a K serial# and judging by the lack of responses no one else has either. As posted above the SPC. ORD. code doesn't work for a julian date as they sometimes don't make any sense.
I looked in the SCS&W 3rd, and the product code 148422 doesn't show up in the Model 4006, 4006-NS section. You could always call S&W customer service and they may be able to give you a date associated with the serial#. If you find something out, please come back and let us know.

Here are a few pics. Also I noticed the sear is marked on the back "For DA gun use only 'M' hammer" Not sure what that's all about but this certainly isn't one of the DA only pistols. I'm going to be detail stripping the pistol later today to give it a good cleaning. I can take any necessary detail photos while I'm in there.

Since they're probably dead, Trijicon can probably relamp the sights for $57. That pistol is definitely in need of a factory grip!

The night sights surprisingly are still pretty bright. I ordered a replacement set of the same hogue grips that are on it. They should be here tomorrow. The Hogue grips only cost me $15, and the only set of factory grips I could find were $35. I don't want them that bad.

Hogue grips are fine if you have bigger hands - too bulky for me. Midway has strangely had curved factory grips in stock for some time - they usually go fast. They also get the straight grips regularly - both are $19. Don't forget a new recoil spring.

I now see that Midway does have the curved grips. Obviously I didn't do a good enough search the other night.

Thanks for the pic's!
Obviously a post 1994ish pistol by the plastic box. You've peaked my interest. There are very knowledgeable members here on the 4006 and hopefully they chime in. If you call S&W let us know the date. I own a 4006 as well but from 1990. Great heavy duty pistols.

Thanks, I was figuring '94-'04 due to the "restricted" magazines.

I got bored today and detail stripped the 4006 for a deep cleaning. It has a plastic disconnector! That seems a bit odd. I realize it's not exactly a high wear item, but the slide contacts it along with the trigger bar, sear, hammer assembly so it is in fact a wear item. Even if said wear is extremely slow. I have nothing against polymer frame pistols, but I feel like internals should be metal of some sort at least.

I'm guesing the plastic disconnector was a change made later in production along with things like the MIM hammer and trigger and plastic mainspring cup.

I bought a 5906TSW off of GB a short time ago with a known broken sear spring. Upon disassembly I found another broken part - the plastic disconnector.

Brownells has the metal version in stock - S&W part #104210000.

Thanks, might have to get one of those.
