I just purchased a used S&W 4040Airlite PD. Something to add to my collection of metal smiths. I believe this on has been modified, as it has no manual safety, just a flush plug. Could this be a factory modification or just a after market one.

There was one on one of the sites I check every day . I was thinking of getting it to see if it could be converted to 10mm . But I got to thinking , it's got to be pretty lite , recoil would be a b**** . Still , a nice 40 S&W .

I thought of that too. Even though it's a single stack .40, it's built on the smaller 9mm frame. I picked one up cheap with some finish issues, so I wouldn't be worried about messing it up. It is a great little .40 shooter though and I carry it from time to time.

Congrats on the new 4040PD 406lawdawg! My personal favorite .40 for CC. Since it can be a hard cartridge and this is a used gun, I would definitely recommend a new set of recoil springs before shooting it.

Sprinco also makes a high-quality aftermarket set, product #45162 at the bottom of the page: Sprinco USA - Springs

I would agree that it looks like a DIY aftermarket conversion to DAO. The thread linked by jsbethel is a good resource on what's been done to your 4040PD. Unlike the NYPD 3914 DAO, yours will not have the second-strike capability.

Nice piece. The 4040PD is a power house. Aside from the Scandium alloy frame, it is virtually identical to the 3914 LS and non LS. I picked up mine on Gunbroker. Mine came with an unmarked slide that appears to be stainless steel. I have tried bluing it, seeing if there is any plating etc. Nothing seems to effect the stainless appearing slide. Your gun has been altered. Not necessarily to the bad. Mine has the safety only on the left side. My 4040 is DAO on the first shot and is quite accurate at SD distances. You might find that the DAO option fits your needs. There are parts out there that can be used to bring it back to factory. BTW magazines are relatively easy to come by...usually in the 30-40 dollar range. Sprinco has the necessary double recoil spring setup for this pistol. Bill, Montana Territory

Thanks

Thank you one and all for the information. This site is not only helpful, but a Class Above.

One of my favorite pistols. I have one that I shoot and one that is NIB sitting in my safe. It has a sharp snap to it compared to shooting my 3913 NL. Nice feature is I only need one holster for both models.[emoji106]

Enjoy shooting it.
