4043 - Bottom feeding revolver?

I fondled a 4043 yesterday at the local shop.

The trigger was great. It reminded me of the LDA trigger system. Not too much travel, and I would guess about 7.5 lbs of pull. This was with a filthy example too. I'll bet it gets sweeter with a cleaned and lubed example.

I have thought that a "bottom feeding revolver", IE a DAO semi auto with a trigger as nice as a model 19, or model 681 revolver would be tops on my wish list.

Is the 4043 such a pistol? Any reliability issues with this model? I seem to recall the Memphis PD being less than pleased with some late model 4043's.

This is a very recently manufactured 4043. It is not a TSW, but does have laser etched markings and is a police trade in.

The only thing that I don't like about this style of S&W's DAO is that there is no second-strike capability. OTOH, I never needed it in thousands of rounds though my 6946 (a hammer whacks a primer a LOT harder than a striker seems to), so it might not be an issue.

Anyway, I can't comment on the 4043 specifically. 3rd Gen pistols seems to be real values, but I don't know about alloy-framed 3rd Gen .40s.

I purchased one since they were so affordable and planned to just keep it in the safe and shoot on trips to the range, I let my son-in law shoot it and now he won't give it back, I enjoyed shooting it also. This was a leo trade in and works great. Background...1970 to 1990 used S&W revolvers as LEO, changed over to Glock 9mm then Glock 40, retired in 1994, our Spec Ops unit used S&W pistols. Hope this helps

I owned a 4043 in the past. I never had an issue with it, nice trigger, totally reliable, and really inexpensive.

However, I'm not a huge fan of the alloy frame and the .40S&W. If you really want all of the above plus lower recoil and longer life, get the 4046 (or the 4586).

I'll be shooting my 4586 at one of the day matches in Oxford in two weeks, you are welcome to give it a try there.

There were two triggers on the 9mm DAO S&W, a longer pull and shorter pull. Not sure about the .40. My 5946 was part of a large LEO order and has the short trigger. My 5943 was civilian all the way and has the slightly longer trigger. The shorter trigger pull is very much like that of my M19's and 66's. Smooth and about the same length. The longer pull is just as smooth, but not quite identical to the revolvers.

I have a 4046 with the short trigger pull. It is exceptionally smooth and I think takes about 9 lbs to fire the gun. I have a Model 28 that was tuned by the Performance Center. That trigger is also smooth but has a longer pull than the 4046. I think that the Model 28 takes about an 8 pound pull. I consider the 4046 to have a better double action trigger than most revolvers.

These short pull double action Smith autos are fine self-defense weapons. They won't appeal to 1911 shooters or perhaps to Glock shooters but will appeal to revolver shooters and to people who understand the difference between a self defense weapon and a bulls-eye target gun.

Don't ignore the 4053's either. They are alloy framed DOA auto's also but I believe with a bit shorter barrel. Mine was a bargain and it is a SWEET carry gun...as well as a great shooter.

Hate to "niggle" over words, but that's my profession...I also hate to be from the "United States of the Offended..."

But "bottom feeding" has another connotation that doesn't really fit S&W DAOs...It applies to politicians -- and car dealers...

How about "Loads from the bottom" -- maybe....

Smith DAOs are hardly "bottom feeders"
