I recently traded for a 4046 tactical 40, clean as a pin. Brought it home and cleaned it, put 50 rounds through it and cleaned it again. Supposedly it's an ex California highway patrol gun. Are there any issues with this gun or any upgrades that would be of benefit for a carry gun? Thanks!

Yessir, just put another 30 rds through it before, makes me grin when I shoot it. Think i'm going to invest in laser grips for it.

To keep the tactical look going, you will need black BDUs, armored vest, ski mask and some tactical boots and kneepads.

Great gun.
One of the best double actions out there.

Except, it was not a CHP gun. CHP carried 4006 and transitioned to 4006TSW.

If you need to re-matte the finish a bit, green Scotchbrite pads do a nice job. It won't be "beaded" but it will be "brushed". Also, if you do it, don't go over the "TACTICAL" markings or I've been told it will take them off.

I was also going to tell you that Bud's Gun Shop has used 11-round mags for $6 a piece but they're out again. I would keep checking back because they've been out before only to be relisted later.

Enjoy your pistol, mine is a gem to be sure,
Scott

I just picked up a 4046, plain not tac-ti-cool, put the first three rounds at 7 yards in a hole the size of a dime. Guess it's a keeper. The thing I did notice was it had a noticable bit of muzzle flip. But what can ya do, it's a .40.

I carried an issued 4046 for about 11 years. It was often referred to by my co-workers as a "Boat Anchor" but the trigger was very smooth, the recoil was not bad thanks to the weight of the all stainless gun and it was pretty darn accurate. When my dept. retired the 4046's I purchased mine for a whopping $250. Now I am wishing I bought more of them.

Since it was used when it was issued to me and I carried it for over a decade it developed some holster wear. I had it bead blasted (stamp engraved serial number and markings unlike the newer models with the laser engraving that get erased when you bead blast) and I replaced the grips. The thing LOOKS LIKE NEW and shoots like a dream. Periodically I like to remind myself what a great shooter it is when I shoot its replacements, first a Glock 23 and now a M&P.40C.

Boy that sure was a heavy pistol to carry but it still shoots wonderfully. And I dare say it has in excess of 4,000 rounds through it and looks brand new thanks to some glass beads. Enjoy your 4046.

Double check on the laser grips if using Crimson Trace. I put a set on my 4006 and when I ordered a set for my Tactical 4006, the grips would not fit. The machined area in the magazine grip for the Tactical was 1/2 inch smaller on length and the Lasergrips would not seat properly due to this change. It may not be a problem on this model, but I would call CT direct to clarify.
