I am having a heck of a time loading mags into my 40c, they have been kept loaded for weeks now. Slide back is fine, but slide forward very hard to accept the mag. I have done the follower mod and even removed some of the spring with no relief. Has anyone seen this get better or is this just the way it is with a real hard smack to get it in. loading the 10rnds has gotten better though

Have you fired the Pistol yet? Did you do that "MOD" before firing the pistol? If not, fire the snot out of it. The magazines will get better with time.

Mine was stiff at first but I never considered altering the mag. I used it and let it break in on it's own...fine now. I figured Smith knows more about the mag than I do.

It seems to me that tight mags are common among the polymer guns for all manufacturers in their attempt to have the most capacity in the smallest package. That's OK though...I get it. My M&P's perform fine but aren't as butter smooth as my 3rd gens.:p

My 8 round shield mag if fully loaded goes in just fine on a closed slide, but the fully loaded 7 rd mag is stiff as hell and has to be smacked into the grip with a closed slide... I figgure it will wear in over time

My 9MM XDS and 45 XDS, both Poly guns aren't tight and neither is my FS M&P 40 or 9 so I was just getting input on the 40c, I will continue to "fire the snot" out of it...still love the gun

Yes, the mags are tight. Welcome to the world of the double stacked magazine.

Have you seen one of these?

That is the Maglula UpLULA pistol mag loader. It will change your world when it comes to loading a mag. You can get one here: SEMI-AUTO PISTOL UPLULA MAGAZINE LOADER | Brownells I tell all my students about them. They are one of the greatest inventions since the magazine itself.

Oh yeah, one more thing. Consider getting new springs for your mags. Cutting them down is never a good idea and can cause feeding issues as time goes by.

I have one of these...actually 2, one stays in the duty bag....my issue isn't loading the magazine with ammo, it's loading it into the gun. None of my other s&w's are that tight including my duty 40

I already have a replacement spring as I only removed half a loop on 1 magazine and received old style followers today from Smith and Wesson, that helped a ton!!

Try inserting the mag with the slide locked back, should be much easier. The top bullet is pressing up against the bottom of the slide on a closed slide.

Thats fine for loading first round but i carry 1 in the chamber and a full mag in the grip.... So 7+1 or 8+1 depending on which mag so there is always 1 round crammed up against the bottom of the slide, but yes would be easier to load first round with slide locked back on the stiffer mags

+1 on the Uplula loader. Although my 40C mags have been easier to load by hand I still use it. Best $30 I spent. It's nice at the range because it's faster to load your mags.

At first, try as hard as I could, I couldn't get that 10th round in. I had to chamber round 9 & top off the mag but I wanted to carry 10+1. Now it's no sweat but using the Uplula loader it's much easier on the fingers & faster.

With time your mags will be easier to load. I found that by loading & unloading them by hand a half dozen times will loosen the spring and then leave the mags loaded even when not in use. That's why cutting some of the spring down is not recommended. After awhile the spring might be too weak to feed properly.
