.41 Magnums

You can shoot any and all 41 magnum ammo out of a model 58 , I bought mine in 1971 , no warnings in owners manual to only shoot police loads.
Lots of full house magnum loads have been shot in mine over the last 46 years with no harm done .
That's it in my avatar... I vote for the model 58 .

Well, if that rarity is your thing, pick up a .38 Super auto and a .280 rifle!

Did you HIT a rabbit with a .44 Magnum? Much meat left?

Hunt bunnies with a .38 or .38 ammo in a .357. Flat point bullets kill best and don't wreck all the meat. But if you were shooting jack rabbits just to thin out agricultural pests, who cares? Few eat them.

I have two rifles. That's all I need or want.

Yep, they are jack rabbits. I think they are in the parasite family. :)

I'v done most of my rabbit hunting with my 28-2 and .357 loads. I think they are just a lot funner to shoot than .38s.

I am a BIG 41 Magnum fan. Ever since I accidentally bought my first one back in the eighties.

The 41 Magnum group photo is about 10 years old and is missing many additions.

This decision of yours is very easy for me as the Model 58 just has no visual appeal to me. So I have never owned one.

The 6" Model 57 would be me choice. That also happens the be the first 41 Magnum I ever owned, though mine is in nickel and still in my possession (lower left corner of group photo)

I never buy a gun because it is worth more than another gun. Monetary value/gain is meaningless if the gun does not speak to me in some way.

I buy for my personal enjoyment and satisfaction, not for profit

HOLY MOLY

We end up with guns for the same reason.

I knew two things about the 27-7 I have the first time I saw it and held it in my hands.

I knew it was a .357 and I wanted it. Turns out its one of my favorites and dollar wise one of my most valuable.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm sure that I'll be corrected, but, in this Mod. 57, - Mod. 58 discussion, a very important factor, has been overlooked, or ignored. When S&W first offered the .41 Mag. revolver, and cartridge, a mod. 58 Mod. was also offered. The 58 was intended to be used for a lower priced, fixed sight, self defense weapon, and S&W recommended that only the lower powered, cast bullet, load be fired in it. Anyone that has tried the "full house" loads in a Mod.58 will surely agree, with S&W's recommendation. The poor choice, of using an over qualified, extremely powerful load for self defense, and, using the Mod. 58 for other than it's intended purpose is what this whole discussion is really about. That's my 2¢ opinion on this matter.
Chubbo

These won't be for self defense - just shooters.

And I hope the m58 can handle healthy .41 magnum loads. I hope both of them can.

I like them both. I currently have 6, blue and nickel 58's, blue and nickel 4" and 6" 57 no dashes. So obviously I'm in the get both category :) If you can have only one though, I'd opt for the 58 as they are harder to come by. If the choice is between a 4" 58 and 8-3/8" 57 then it's really a no brainer for me. I let my 8-3/8" guns go as they were just taking up too much safe space, have to draw the line somewhere.

This is what I feed my .41 Magnums...it isn't a super powerful load and being copper plated I haven't noticed any leading problems. My guns (including the 58's) shoot it well and like happy little puppies compared to my .44 Magnums. I typically buy it when it's on sale and with free shipping.

Thanks for the link.

Which ever you choose, you will enjoy shooting the .41. Both models are great!

Thanks. I might end up having to sell something to get both.

Something........ but not another gun. :D

I unloaded my 125th anniversary for a 3 1/2" .357 Magnum. I wont part with any of the others that I have.

Too bad all the kids are out on their own. LOL

I just like shooting magnum loads. :D

Can anyone help with the dates on these two?

For Concealed Carry there are LOTS of choices other then the 4" Model 58 that are all smaller and/or lighter.

Just staying in Smith and Wesson there is the 2 5/8" Model 657 Personal Defense Revolver

Or a favorite of mine, the Scandium framed, 2 1/2" Model 357 Night Guard

There are the Model 57 and Model 657 Mountain guns. The stainless version would not be a bad choice for concealed carry if you wanted to go to a 4" barrel

Outside of Smith and Wesson there is the old Astra TERMINATOR. These were a John Jovino conversion sold through Astra dealers

Then there are the 2 1/2", 5 shot, L-frame sized, Taurus Model 415 in stainless steel and 415T in Total Titanium

The Total Titanium version weighs only 19 ounces and pocket carries in the 5.11 Covert Khakis very nicely.

I carried this 640-1 for several years.

I've been carrying this 642-1 for about 5 years now.

A close friend recently gave me this 60-14 .357 Lady Smith but I've yet to carry it.
It came with a nice shoulder holster, in the waste band and a ankle sock holsters.

For the last week or so I'v been carrying my M&P .45 in a shoulder holster just to see what its like.
I'll stick with my 642-1.

Neither one of these .41 mags will ever be carry guns. Just shooters.

I have both a 57 and a 58 with 4" barrels.

The 58 is probably a little higher in value than a 6" 57.

the 57 will shoot better with it adjustable sights and Target options. The 58 is a service revolver.

You have to decide what you will use it for and which one appeals to you.

I have never owned a M58. I have handled them though. As stated above, they are a service grade revolver, and frankly I would not consider them more desirable than a M57. One of the nicest guns I ever had was a M65 357 mag, it too was a service grade gun, but i would not take it over a M19 or M66. Nor would I take a HB M10 over a M15, or a M13 over a M19. Just preference I guess, but i think the M57 is a classier piece.

Below are a couple NIB M57's . Personally i would rather have either over a M58

All the years I rode Harley's , I always had a classy ride . Occasionally someone would reinterate the old saying , " chrome don't get you home " . I would always come back with " yeah, but I'll be the best looking guy on the side of the road " . Regards, Paul
