431PD Question

I just picked up a 431PD in 32 H&R Mag. First time I've ever seen a J channel metal above the forcing cone on the inside frame. I know they were on the .357 alloy J frames but never seen one on a .38 or .32. Anyone know why??? I was thinking it was a 357 frame used at the factory by mistake - THANKS

Yup. Not sure it’s really needed on something as puny as the .32 Magnum but I guess it doesn’t hurt anything. I suppose S&W did enough testing to know it was a good idea.

I haven't seen the blast shield in other pics of 431PDs I've seen online, but I haven't seen any in person, either.

S&W might've just decided to simplify scandium frame inventory/production by reducing variation down to exposed and shrouded hammer frames.

Probably figured it was cheap insurance. Better safe than sorry.
