Does S&W produce a revolver chambered in 44-40?

Of recent manufacture, 1986 to be exact, they made the model 544, a 5" N frame.

They did produce a limited run of commerative N frames back around 1986 chambered in 44-40 though.

Colt? Uberti?

I am looking for a revolver in 44-40 to go with the new Winchester 1892 Takedown that just joined the family.

Any suggestions. Quality is an important consideration.

You can buy new Colt SAAs in .44-40 in the box right now and also some clones. Double action in .44-40 is much less common except for S&W's 5" mentioned above. There are S&W antiques in .44-40 both DA and SA but I wouldn't shoot them a lot. Good hunting.

This is the 544 commemertive. It`s a 5" barrel 44-40. I bought this used but I dont belive it`s been fired. Been thinking about it though.

It's not too difficult to find a Colt New Service in .44-40. It can be expensive, though. A Uberti SAA clone would be both easier to find and cheaper.

The most modern revolver to match the M92 would be a Ruger Vaquero. Though discontinued, used ones should be possible to find, and they'll handle any load safe for the M92. I have a M92 rifle in 44-40 and used to have a Vaquero to match. If you handload for the 92, Starline barss is the way to go. Bob!!

Buy a Colt Frontier Six Shooter and be done with it. Great gun and the new ones are showing superb quality.

Colt makes a high quality 44-40 SAA that would go perfectly with your levergun. The one on top was purchased new a couple of years ago, and factory fitted with an extra 44 Spcl cylinder. Good luck finding a 544, I've seen pictures but haven't been lucky enough to stumble onto one yet.

I load the 44 WCF with 200 gr bullets and real gunpowder (aka: Black Powder ffg). This is a great way to really connect with history on a very personal level. It IS a bit of trouble compared to loading the smokeless stuff, but worth it.

By the way, what revolver did you decide to match to your carbine?

You will likely want to size to .427, although if a .428 bullet chambers in both your carbine and revolver it may provide a little, very little, better accuracy.

If one crimps a little loosely, the bullets will drop down into the cases when stacked in a rifle magazine tube. Crimp too tight and the things will not chamber. I use RCBS 44 WCF Cowboy dies and have had good luck.
