44 H.E. 2nd Mod. Target #49369

Recently I had the utter good fortune to become the owner of this breath-taking Second Model .44 HE Target. Today I snapped a few photos to share. These are just quickies taken out on my woodpile very informally.

Roy says it shipped in February 1939.

Everything, including the gorgeous pre-WW2 Magnas, matches. It shows scant use. The bore and chambers are mint.

It's everything one would want in a .44 revolver. I feel incredibly fortunate to be the new caretaker.

That seems to be a late shipping date for that SN. I list many SNs not too far away from yours, all of which shipped in the 1936-37 period. Maybe it has something to do with its being a target model.

I'd have to think that one was probably built in the '36-'37 time slot due to the small monogram on the left of the frame. By 1939 they had gone to the larger monogram on the side plate.

Definitely a prime example of a 2nd Model .44 Target.

And this one (58669, shipped May 14, 1940) figures to be one of the last .44 2nd target models----if you figure like I do.

This gun, along with 38 others (ALL .44 2nd TARGETS) were shipped to a New York City distributor at the bargain basement price of $17.00 each. That absolutely HAS to be a close-out price. Here's why. The cost to manufacture a 22/40 (and grip adapter) was $14.55---that being the amount charged off to S&W's advertising account for each of four such items given to a couple of famous folks and a couple of police departments. I figure there's no significant difference in the cost to manufacture an N frame target than a K frame target---aside from the cost of a bit more steel for the N frame. I also figure S&W didn't lose any money on this deal------damn sure didn't make much, but didn't lose any.
